Hello Mikeysboard,

It's been a long time since I've frequented MB on a regular multiple times a day basis and I was wondering if you could take a second and bring me back up to speed on industry/profession changes? I've been off the boards for about 1.5 to 2 years.

What else have I missed? I don't mean to stir up any old arguments so if it's better to private message me, that's fine.

I'm just curious what's changed in the carpet cleaning world? Is carpet cleaning dead and hardwood and tile taking over? Is it VLM only now?

Hi Richard, I'm doing OK but I've had a tough 2 years. A.year and a half ago, I had a severe low blood sugar reaction. Somehow while staggering aroun trying to make myself something to eat to get my blood sugars up, I stumbled and attempted to regain my balance. I planted my foot. However, I turned my leg as my momentum shifted but my foot didn't budge and I suffered a Tib/Fib fracture in 3 places in each bone of my left leg. I had a rod inserted in my tibia 2 days later on June 24. But during the procedure the bones were spaced too far apart the heal and Dec 24 of last year the doctor removed the top pin so the bones would compress and heal. Its taken a while to get back on my feet again and I'm 100% but pretty close. I can't run around and play with my kids like I would like to but hopefully that will come.
I had to moth ball the business because it was just me running everything and the business was not really generating enough money for me to go full time with it. I'd too many mistakes and a lot of repair bill kept me in the garage more than on the road... no excuse for my own bad business decisions. Family relations are strained and my wife wants me to just liquidate my crap that nobody wants and move on. I see things differently but can't scrape up the funds to relaunch. There's always something upsetting the apple cart so to speak.

Anyway....enough about.my pity party! So what's the best traffic lane cleaner, wand, Rotary extractor, porty, to use? LOL just kidding.

Before I broke my leg I picked up a part time job at Lowe's in flooring. I found a lot of people (here anyway) are ripping out carpet and putting in laminate or tile. Are you guys seeing carpet dry up or shrink considerably? Have you been getti g more calls for wood cleaning and maintenance? Is residential frying up and commercial becoming a crucial part of your business? Any other growing trends in our industry in the last 2-3 years that I may have missed while being "out of it" for a while?

How have you been Richard? Still putting up with Marty's backhanded comments I see... ha ha ha. Its nice to see some things remained the same.

Wow that's a rough ride. Good to see you're taking it in stride. The part time job is a good idea to keep cash flow coming.

Thanks for taking a second to sort of address one of my rambling questions. Can I ask some questions about your wood floor care?

When did you start offering this service?
What and how long was the learning curve for you to get to the point where you were really efficient at this service? It looks simple enough but it also looks time consuming.
Is this a growing percentage of your total service offerings? Are you looking to expand this service?
Do you have a lot of competition in this service area?
What are your costs.and what do you charge?

If these are too personal to mention here would you be comfortable to PM me your answers?

I started offering it after trying it out on my own floor and being very happy with the results. After two jobs I felt pretty efficient. I clean the open areas, move all the furniture I am moving, clean all those areas, apply polish to those areas, wait two hours, return furniture, clean again, apply polish, and charge $1/sqft. I am the only person I know of in my area that offers it. I only do a couple a year as I don't push it. Labor is by far the biggest expense. Supplies are negligible
