So what industry known son has more Passion than his father in continuing the family business.
I'll put mark seager on that list as well as Scott rampage it possibly Jim Pemberton on the supply side but I'm not so sure that seeing how Lee is father is still involved in his eighties something I don't Jim doing...

Who else do you have?

All he needs is a couple of more kids and a wife who doesn’t work

There is a lot of truth to that.

My father started in business because his one full time and two part time jobs still couldn't support three kids and work options for my mother weren't many. His drive was survival every day.

I don't know that I'd have had his courage to do what he did.

No, let me rephrase that: I wouldn't have had his courage or drive.

Well, this is all interesting....as it is a struggle.

Thank goodness for Son in Law Aron....best thing next to puppies brought home!

Today, we are searching for another person....at this moment as I type this....as adding an additional person....but they could be a replacement person too....

We had a group meeting as myself, my wife Shari, Aron....and we discussed what we need right now and for the future.

I have some things going on and need to also be ready for some changes.

We have been looking into a great Accounting Firm and moving to them (Former students of mine and now Third Generation...with Dad still available to guide)

So much going on to try and plan with the passing of the torch...

I also am going to take more time for other things...and it wouldn't be fair to just throw it at our kids and say "Good Luck"

We want them to be successful....so we all don't have to move in with Marty (if he even made it this far reading this :biggrin: )

I have so much going...hard to share it all....but stay tuned and I will try to share something that might be of value someday (Maybe even in a video :) )

Not at all.

It speaks to Epictetus' admonition to remember one's mortality at the times of great triumphs. It's been said that a victorious Roman general would have a servant whisper this, in a variety of ways, to remind him that victory and life are fleeting.

I feel you do likewise for Mike when you remind him of his humanity at his times of triumph....such as his award.

You are a modern Stoic philosopher....

You have to admit, you do have a way of bringing Mike down to earth....

It might have been more accurately translated as "momento homo" meaning "remember you are a man", but the term "homo" would really have caused some confusion, so I thought it better not to use that one.

Kinda depressing that there are no other examples

too soon to tell , as I just recently passed the torch to my son
and he fully has the reins now

He has the knowledge and skill to take it to the "next" level
In the year and half we've been partners, he's organized the biz like a "real one" instead of my "fly by the seat of the pants" style

Knows the contracting trades, codes and regs intimately , and has enough "hands on" experience in general carpentry/plumbing/electrical to do quality work.

and is flat out tremendous on sales (he closed new sales on over $100k this summer)

His "make or break it" hurdles right now as I see it;

completing jobs on schedule ...which he's stumbled badly on a few.
( all the big one$ that take 4 to 6+ weeks to complete that I wasn't in full control of)

a combination of over promising time lines for fear of not closing the sale .
and underestimating realistic production times
(that partly due to years previous experience of running a $22m a year donut factory, but little experience on the shop floor actually kneading the dough and and sperading icing )

and his inefficient use of man power resources ...that I continually kick his azz about
(I'm an efficiency freak)


he gets those problems squared, he'll not only survive, but will thrive

same here.... anyone's that's worth a chit is buried

had a bid opportunity this week .
Looking over the pre-bid specs they send out to contractors on their list (also public bid, so any contractor can request one)
looked to be bout a $60K renovation job
But it was 50 miles away and we're too busy to get tied up on it ...so I didn't bother to go to the walk-thru
apparently we're not the only one .

I got an email that NO contractors showed up and they've rescheduled another walk-thru




Problem isn't finding work
It's finding "competent" workers to fill positions .
it's tough just to find laborers that can pass a drug test or aren't terminally ill with the stupid gene .
let alone skilled or even semi-skilled workers
