Jerry and I were talking about beginning marketing, ie how we survived when we first started, and all the normal marketing advice about follow up calls and cards, reminders and newsletters, etc and how those work once there are some customers.

What did you do your first 6 -12 mths?

I remember doing a lot of bad ads, door to door, handed out over 4000 busn cards my first year. KNew nothing about marketing nothing about busn, there were no boards to ask.
I was doing an excellent job (porty) so I did leave happy customers, some became clients. And no, I wasn't vacuuming then shiteatinggrin
Never got a call from the door to door, nor the ads, but I did do 20K accidentally.

My first 6 months are a bit skewed, because I did take over an existing business, it just was't doing very well. I "designed" some really awful flyers, postcards, biz cards, etc., and implemented none of them consistently.

I subbed out for a company to supplement the income while I built my customers base with some small online advertisements

In my first year I personally delivered 55,000 flyers to paperboxes in the area... The flyers really sucked as far as the design, but I did ok the first year. I also had a listing in the phonebook that did nothing.

We did pretty good. Spent good money on the yellow pages. I really think that being a franchise (at the time) also helped.

The only thing that flyers were ever good for was to loose weight. I guess that's not a bad thing.
