Since service ads are no longer free (5$), I think many things have changed, at least in my market.

It has definitely weeded out all the bottom feeders, bait-n-switchers, and all the Chavez's with no credit cards, and cut out all the spammy repetitive ads.

My lead quality and number of leads has definitely improved since the change.

Love'em or hate'em, they are still a big player, especially in major areas.

Anyone hungry for growth who had previously dismissed CraigList may want to take a fresh look at it, try a few new paid ads, and re-evaluate them.

Interesting---Years ago Amazon and Yahoo both jumped in to compete with Ebay. They both offered free listings while ebay charged 10 cents for listings up to one month long. I put stuff up both on Yahoo and Amazon back then but only sold a few things. Amazon and Yahoo had so much junk up for sale nobody could find MY good stuff. Craigslist has singlehandedly killed the local newspapers which had huge revenues from their classified sections. Now charging for commercial listings will definitely increase the value of Craigslist and the listings.
