Having to bust through wax covered grout is sure a pain. Visual inspection doesn't always reveal coatings and finishes.

How do you determined if finishes are present?

Thanks,
Steve

Applying an acid to the grout is one way, it should fizz on contact. If not there could be a coating (or it's epoxy)

A razor blade is a good way, most waxes/finishes will scrape off.

Look for shiny grout.

That about covers it.

Razor the edges.

Get down low and look at the tile into the light. Look for scratches in the coating on the tile.
