What Volunteer work have you done lately?

A lot of you maybe having a tough year but what have you done lately?

One of the toughest jobs in America... Being a working single parent.

I know a lady that does not believe in Abortion. She doesn't do protests or kill doctors that perform them. She babysits every other Friday night from 5 pm to midnight for single moms.

Women or Girls who have acted on their beliefs and not had an abortion. She schedules it ahead of time so the girls--mainly--can prepare for a night off.

Do you know any nice people that are not making it? Do you have any friends that are really down on their luck? Anybody ever been given a lead by a Realtor that is now in really tough shape? Schedule a free carpet cleaning for them---Don't tell them you are going to do it.

Make an excuse that you want to try some new equipment or whatever. Tell them you have been very lucky the last few years and when things turn up for them they can pass some good JuJu to someone else.

Depression and dirty floors go together.

Happy Holidays
Rick

Being unexpectedly nice to someone gives you a warm fuzzy feeling.

Odin,
I hear that all the time but everytime I toot my horn it is a reminder and a recruitment effort to get others involved. We are having a special election Tuesday and I will be out there helping. Today was my day to volunteer to do a foster home for a woman who has 5 foster kids and because of Christmas presents can't afford to get her house in order so a rep from DSS called me who calls me occasionally in dire circumstances. I will be hanging lights sat 6 am for the Polar express for the Marshfield Boys and Girls Club as well as hooking up all the electrical and setting up santas village and then hocking hot chocolate and then rip[ping it all down at 9 pm. I also wax the floors monthly at the B&G Club at no charge and then maintain the facility weekly(3 times a week cleanings) for about $100(a little less than cost. I am citizen Liason to the Police dept and have meetings every weds morning with the Capt after answering the phone on citizen complaints all week. I could go on and I do hope it spurs others to step it up.

That is my WEEK and I am proud of what I do. the cash donations is silent. Cash can't talk

I do stuff for ALS (have a friend with ALS) and local church when someone is in need

I don't consider it tooting my horn if someone asks but thanks for that. I have a group I want to be involved with in some cleaning, I am going to call them.

Toot or not the warm fuzzy feeling is enough reward.

The only caveat is it must be done without wanting something in return. It also must be done so as not to put down the person you are helping.

That is too cool and very refreshing to hear

yes, we do a fair amount of work for the less fortunate on my dime.
and yes, it does make me feel all "warm and fuzzy" and no, I don't do it for any gain...other than the good feeling I get from it

I don't give free carpet cleaning very often. Guess I've never really pursued non profits to see what I could do for them. I've never been real crazy about working for free.

I'm active in the local Rotary Club, and we build FREE wheelchair ramps for those in need a couple of Saturdays per month.
The wife and I do other things for people, but not in a PR kind of way.

Jeremy's got some good ideas for building your business, and there is NOTHING wrong with hoping that someone notices your generocity, and that you will benefit from all the FREE work done for non profit causes.

Everytime the Rotarians build a FREE ramp, we all get together afterwards and take a group photo for the local newspaper. EVERYTIME. Wasn't my idea, but the local heavy hitters(and I mean HEAVY) want their picture taken for the PR.

"Money don't get everything it's true.
What it don't get I can't use.
So gimme money THAT'S WHAT I WANT"

Giving what you do best is often the easiest and most powerful gift.

I can honestly say the Saturday I spent helping a friend (who was down on his luck) clean his living room and carpet was a turning point for him. His work area was devastated, Stuff all over and the carpet was hammered. It completely changed his mood and motivation.

It was fun watching him vacuum after we hauled most of his junk out of the room. His spirits lifted. When I cleaned the carpet he jumped up another notch or two. He has always been kindof a clean freak.

A little forward momentum and breathing room sometimes can give a huge boost.

Sanjay Singh (who is just Odin under another name) said it somewhat best. While doing good things is nice, I remember my Father-In-Law telling me when I first went into business not to ever do what you do for a living for free. And, he used the "no good deed goes unpunished" line into the conversation.

I thought he was just being an old goat when he told me that, but 22 years later I understand what he means. I will paint for someone, or fix their plumbing problems or cut their grass, etc., if they need it. However, I will not clean for free. Every time I have cleaned for free, in the past, it has come back to bite me, for some reason. It's those free jobs, or the artifically low priced ones you do as a favor that seem to have the call back problems.

The soulless Stevie B and admiral make some great points,
I have been searching how to cull some of my volunteer efforts because my two youngest are getting very busy.
