I left my cell phone at home this morning when I left to clean some carpet at an office. It wasn't because I forgot it. It was because I left it on a different table. I usually leave it on my desk, and when it wasn't there, I just took off, not thinking about it

When I got to my job, I realized that I left it at home, and thought, "I don't always need my phone". WRONG!

When I unlocked and opened the door, the alarm went off. They forgot that I was coming. So since I couldn't call anyone, I just sat there and waited for someone to come turn it off, or a cop to see that I wasn't there for any illegal reasons.

Surprising enough, nobody came, not even a police officer. So I cleaned the carpet while the alarm was screaming at me.

What are your imperfections of habit?

What you're describing is the reason pilots are required to use checklists. If they skip a step thinking they will come back to it they will likely forget - because it's not in the normal place. We are indeed creatures of habit.

I have left wands, pump sprayers...forgotten blowers at Customers homes and my cell phone and wallet at my own home...more than once. I think now with the Zippers and rotary tools etc. a check list would be a good idea.

You can tell the Zipper is the flavor of the month when it gets squeezed into almost all threads, including one like this one that has nothing to do with it, lol
Flavor of the month? Someone mentioned leaving a wand and I have done that. I will have both Zippers and a CRB and can see myself leaving one of those as well. If I had said leaving a CRB would that have been a flavor of the month? There are Zipper videos on youtube from 2010... not the flavor of the month anymore. People love their Zippers Matt :-) There, there is now 5 more Zipper mentions squeezed into this thread ;-) Zipper video to follow!

It is hard to believe how dependent I have become to my cell phone. I always have to go
back and get it. Yet when I had only a land line I could sit there and not even pick it up.

I did something similar once. I was doing a late night job and the alarm was supposed to be turned off. I unlocked the door and sure enough the alarm goes off. The contact number I had wasn't being answered so just like you I began cleaning until somebody comes. The cops show up about an hour later and pissed because it's a false alarm. They tell me why didn't call the police to tell them it was a false alarm. I think that's a great strategy for burglars, set the alarm off? just call your local police department and explain it and that they don't have to send anyone out to check it. I live 25 minutes from our shop. If I forget anything, I'm not going back for it. :errf:

To silence the siren, find the control box, open it and unscrew the wire labled appropriately enough, "siren."

It'll still call the cop, but at least that blanketyblank noise stops.

Yeah, that'd make me look good doing that on a security camera, lol

That's quite reassuring that the alarm company or police didn't respond! Alarm must work but isn't connected to a call center.

I cleaned a place where we'd do her main house during the week and her office on a Saturday when the ladies aren't in... While I was cleaning, I opened the door that connected to the main house... The door had that little door stopper sticking out at the bottom of the door... I didn't know the lady armed her alarm... I opened it real quick, cleaned it and closed it not thinking anything of it... About 10 seconds later the alarm is blaring and I'm sh!tting bricks, as I only had her office and house number... Now I said fook it and kept cleaning...

The Alarm company contacted her and let her know the alarm went off.. She told them not to call the police as she was having her carpets cleaned... She said she was debating arming the alarm before she left... All of that happened while her next door neighbor was making a police report of her house getting robbed... The officer didn't even flinch while the alarm was going off, didn't come around or anything... I chucked it up to my good looks, but in reality stuff was going on behind the scenes...

Moral of my story, any time I get left unattended in someone house or unit, I ask them if they're expecting anyone.......like a service repair guy or cable guy, or friend to come around.... I don't let anyone in unless I'm told otherwise... If they are setting the alarm to a certain section of the house, I ask if the area I'm cleaning will be affected by it...

I believe a false alarm cost the home owner $50+ to send out a cop... That's why they try to contact the home owner first before dispatching the officer... If you have multiple false alarms, then the cost goes up... In the day and age of security cameras, they can see if it's an intruder or just a hack carpet cleaner who set off the alarm... Sorry Matty!
