Wear Age of carpet?

I see a bunch of carpet cleaning sites that offer to "determine the wear age of the carpet" as part of their initial inspection. Is there really a way to do that? If so, how?

Very subjective guesses.

The mills have finessed the "wear waranties" to avoid paying claims. The face fiber can look "shot to h*ll" but weighing samples proves that the carpet is "still there", just clobbered flat.
