What in the heck are you supposed to do with these cow hide rugs?

Water doesn't hurt the face, but it could shrink and shrivel if you got the skin wet.

We've hand tooled smaller ones. We also used Host and a brush and vacuumed some old family heirlooms. Used compressed air for final dusting off. All looked great but none were of that construction.

You have strips of skin, I'd be concerned with wetting yours.

You could sew it back into a cow or 2, walk them through a river and reassemble. Or try talking to Roger Koh. I was out for dinner with him once and he was telling me about cleaning everything from hunting trophies to stuffed squirrels. The man knew his stuff.

I month or two ago I was offered the opportunity to clean a rug just like that one-- I passed.

But maybe next time I'll clean it with a Dry Compound and compressed air.

I have done several in the shop. Fine fabric presprays and light brushing, then rinse with a neutral rinse. Don't overwet, don't saturate the skin.

It is hair. How would you clean the hair without getting the leather saturated? How would you clean a wool rug? Only difference is one is sheep hair one is cow hair with leather. I would handtool or CRB with VLM.

You use lower pressure and don't over soak it. Not hard. You can treat the skin with leather cleaning products to keep it more supple. Using an upholstery tool works great. Lay it over a table and work it bit at a time.
