"Our carpenters used a plastic carpet protector with adhesive on our new wall-to-wall carpet, and there is some sticky residue left on the areas that they left it on, for a month, just took it off. We can see this will collect dirt over time.
Any help for that?"

Any ideas? Customer just sent this in an Email.
This client just spent 18 months on the remodel.
Client is very very "In tune, persnickity, chemically sensitive, and wants everything to be perfect. Any residue will not be acceptable.

New carpet.

Solvent will take the goo off the carpet but will it ever rise to the level of the customer? For the picky, often just the memory of the something being there means it is still there.

Normally that type of adhesive will come off with a hot truck mount. Like Steve said, Prespray (with a hot prespray) take a brush pro to it and extract. I just did one in my condo building like that. They had the same plastic down for 3 months and when they took it up, you could feel the adhesive. The edges were dark and the middle was spotless. After we cleaned it, it all evened out and when it dried, there was no adhesive left.

I have a job just like this one next week. I told the customer that I will have to use a strong smelling solvent. And the only guarantee I can give is I will try my best. Customer fully understand and said I'm sure it will be better than it is now. And thank me for taking the job.

Your job I would run from. I don't like dealing with picky customers. You going have to use a solvent. Than they going complain about the smell. After you clean they will say they liked it but will call you back in a couple days later saying they are now getting headaches from the smell and the carpets are attracting dirt again. :)

Picky or unreasonable?

Picky clients appreciate an effort.

Dilimonene with a good rinse will work fine and is non toxic, naturally (some) derived (you know the spiel.). You can apply to a bonnet pad and go over if whole room. Then pre-spary with a good traffic lane cleaner (you can boost with delimo) agitate and rinse very well with a detergent rinse.

Collect money and in the pre-existing conditions that surely you made the client sign, specify that a return visit will be charged at normal rate.

Hope you get called back :winky:

The longer the plastic is left in place the harder the residue is to remove, and I'd question the statement that the plastic was only down for one month out of an eighteen month project.

You're going to have to use some solvent. If the customer can't make accomodations for that, the only way to fix this is to pull the carpet and clean it off-site.

It is possible the residue won't be bad and it comes up easily, but currently this is an issue between homeowner and contractor. Be wary of making it your problem.

PS: The makers of the sticky plastic product have been forced to replace carpet, but say that this was due to a supplier using the wrong adhesive. seems like the problem has gone on for too many years to blame it on one mistake by one supplier.
