why do some wool rugs stink when wet?

Surdi's thread and Jim Nelson's mention of wet wool smelling foul got me wondering.

I've noticed the wet chicken smell too on many (most) wool rugs when cleaning them

why do most smell foul like that?

Many years ago at a certification class I went to, this questions was asked. If i remember correct, wool contains 4% sulfar and when wet or burned smells bad.

Damn you kinda of beat me too it. Actually different wool breeds contain different percentages of sulfar. The higher the percentage the stronger the "wet dog smell."

one time i like i heard someone say that the better quality wool the less stink. kinda like well you know what i mean. :shock:

I was told it smells that way because in the old days before lites the boys could find the sheep in the dark after a rain thats why sheep herders have big noses. jack z. yep mine is big !
