Picked up a tan colored wool rug that lady recently dropped some dark brown hair dye on it, the spots are the size of a penny, I told her the stains are permanent & there isn't much that can be done, she understands the problem.

I was thinking about trying Pro’s Choice “Power Gel” or just going straight to the "crayon trick", any suggestions?

Dye plus hair. RUN!!!!! Run fast and run hard, but run.
(The roots should be grey in a couple of weeks.)

Check out the Rug Hub, they just had a huge post over there about dye correction.. Perhaps some things to learn from and try out on this rug.

So, can you do the crayon trick with stains that are darker than the carpet color?

I would of said that you need to strip the darker colour first then use the crayons to replace the original colour, being a wool rug be carful what you use to strip the hair dye

I am not going to have a chance to work on this rug for at least another week, stripping the dye sounds interesting followed by crayons might work.

The custy has written off the rug, but its become a challenge for me so I am willing to try a few things.

what kind of hair dye?

I don't know what brand of hair dye she uses.

So far I tried Cyclone from Vacaway, then rinsed, after drying applied Stain magic for wool, maybe a 15% improvement so far. I was searching around the web & found http://www.rugrag.com, they suggest the following steps...

http://www.rugrag.com/stain-removal/Hai ... Brown.aspx

1. Soak in Detergent & Vinegar Solution.
2. Agitate occasionally.
3. After 30 minutes,
4. Rinse with water.
5. Allow to dry.
6. Apply Alcohol to stain and cover with Absorbent Material dampened with Alcohol.
7. Let stand as long as any stain is being removed.
8. Change pad as it picks up stain. Press pad hard onto stain each time you check it.
9. Keep stain and pad moist with Alcohol.
10. Flush with Alcohol.
11. Allow to dry.
12. Soak in Detergent & Ammonia Solution.
13. After 30 minutes,
14. Rinse with water.

I doubt its going to help, but for my own peace of mind I need to try, custy was ready to trash the rug but I like a good challenge.
