Sometime ago, maybe in the 80's, I seen a carpet cleaning guys van with some pre spray on the carpet or cleaning solution spilled that was so strong after awhile it ate a hole into the wood or the carpet and just recently I was called off a job and had put down a small amount of pretreatment and I'm wondering is this going to damage the carpet does it have to be removed

Let me make sure I understand what you're asking.....

So you were on a job and got kicked off AFTER you had already presprayed?

The answer is yes you should remove what ever you put down. It may not eat the carpet but it will leave a sticky mess.

Of course it all depends on what product you prespraued with.

Well about the 80's incident, I'm not surpised because so many unsafe raw chemicals were floating around back them - bathtub chemists.

I doubt that any of today's pre-sprays would need to be removed after application because they were afraid it was going to cause permanent damage to the carpet.

Residue left, sure, but that wold only make the carpet re-soil faster - it would not permanently damage it.

I was thinking as they spilled in the van the cleaning solution may have sat and never cleaned, it burnt' into the carpet. So if it's on the stairs for 2 weeks it's not going to kill it.

If you had to leave for personal reason's or the customer had an emergency and you are planning on returning in two weeks to clean the carpets... don't worry about it.. of course knowing what you lead with would help too.

Don't some of the new Traffic lane cleaners brag PH 14?
Diluted!!!

....and Cobb's are even better!
I burn't my hands on some like that about 30 years ago. I think it was Zep powder. I was working for a mom and pop company (more mom than pop) and we used to fill our small buckets out of 45 gal. drums. One day the scoop was missing so I just used my hands to fill my small container and just dusted off my hands. The next day, all the skin fell off my hands. I had to get out of the business for about a year, I worked construction to toughen my hands. I don't know why the hell I came back to this business but here I am. Hopefully better educated now.

I have some lye in my garage, next time I have a scrap I'll test it. It will eat your skin off but I doubt it will eat synthetic carpet.

Maybe they tried to descale their truckmount and some nasty muriatic acid spilled. I bet that would eat up whatever carpet or fabric it touched.
Just a thought...
I hope to God they weren't using it as a prespray!

What was spilled was probably undiluted at full strength, never rinsed, and very likely a combination of many different products.

At diluted RTU levels your prespray should not be as potentially damaging, but definitely something you want to address sooner than later.

Very light prespray dilution on the next round would probably be a good idea.

Yes definitely spills of a few products, maybe from filling bottles, loading the truck mounts cleaning solution? I still can't believe I even noticed this, and that I remember it. I never cleaned carpet or rugs I just happened to be at the building when the rug guy came to clean, was funny the first guy that looked said no, too dirty and walked, the customer was like can u believe this guy! He doesn't want money.
