Why even buy it, just rent it from the grocery store when you get a job lined up.

I interviewed an owner/operator once who claimed that was how he worked.
I met a guy here doing the same thing. He was doing apartment hallways. He was dirt cheap but so were his expenses.

It's branding doesn't matter if your a major franchise or 1 man band there is a brand attached.
And that is defined by what others say about you not what you say about yourself or your team.
Brands can drop in public perception but seldom rise (marketing 101)
If as a franchise or owner operator you're seen as cheap & nasty thats where you stay.
Different tools or prespray etc is'nt going to change your customers perception of you they already hired or declined you based on there old perception.
And the best "tool" is the one holding the wand (happy to be a tool)

The hand grenade I threw at CJ was simply a way of introducing my self...to someone that I believe can bring some insight to our board....

With the workers available today I wouldn't worry too much about any big company.
In fact that is the number one problem with most businesses today...............employees
(quoted from above)
SO TrUE ! The problem is the larger operator can offer benefits and a retirement plan that most owner operators DON'T even have for themselves. They will win the recruiting war every time, guaranteed.
The problem with your analogy Randy is that the owner operator does not need to recruit employees, he works by himself.
So your point relates more to the competition between the 3-7 truck company and the stenleys of the world.

And at the current economy and employment, the Stenley's choice of workers from the work pool is quite limited. Also the more expensive tools they buy and the more pre-vac, pre-scrub, pre- you name it, they do, the harder it will be for them to maintain the quality.

Not only will they incur extra equipment expenses, their employees will need to spend more time on each job. Which again will cut further into their margins. And their margins include a lot of extras the O/O does not have to pay. [An office and a large facility (can't do it in the kitchen and garage like we poor bastards do), office staff, franchise fee, workers comp, extra insurance, more vehicle repairs, cause you know employees , not unlike children, are not known to be extra careful about a van they never paid a penny to buy.......or the equipment. Etc, etc &.........etc.]

So eventually they will need to raise prices, which will cut into their USP (Unique selling proposition) which currently is WBC- "We be cheap."

Not to talk about how long will their employees really keep doing all that extra, because it ain't brain surgery but it still hard physical work that requires discipline. And discipline in employees is not a given and enforcing it ain't cheap and neither is training.

So, the sky is not falling.
Not saying we do not need to adjust. We do.

But the smart O/O that understands and capitalizes on his strength and advantages & caters to his niche, will eat the Stenleys lunch every single day.
And the Smart Stenley franchise owner that can capitalize on their strength and advantages, will eat the dumb cleaner's lunch every day.

Right now, I feel that I'm the best in my area with my online reviews, reputation, and lack of competition, and the fact that 2 of my previous competitors are sending some and all of their carpet customers my way. I'm not saying that to sound arrogant. The reason I'm bringing that up is because I'm gonna feel a bit worried if SS opens up a shop in my area, because there's one thing that I can't compete with...Marketing. I can't afford to do all those TV and radio commercials, and EDDM mail outs to the whole population.

Right now, the distant SS location has my county and the outside counties in their location, but I never see them around. I'm not worried at all about zero rez rust vans coming in my area, because the rural requirements for their business plan doesn't match. They like the big, cluttered cities only, from what their manager told me at a customer appreciation day about a year ago. But SS???? If they follow suit to the way Mr. CJ runs and operates his business...how am I gonna compete and KEEP my customers?

Much ado about nothing. All the guys in large metropolitan areas have the large guys marketing all the time. They hype their equipment, their drying times, their environmentally friendliness, etc. None of it matters. The owner/operators carve out their niche markets anyway. Many people just don't like dealing with large companies. It can be very impersonal at times from the initial telephone call to the actual cleaning service. People choose who they want to deal with based on their own experiences. When yellow pages was the main directory, large corporations would take full page ads and attract a lot of attention but many people would flip right past them, looking for the smaller, local services. I say focus on your market, personalize your service, up your skills and the large companies will never bother you.
