Got an email today announcing a sale on Karastan rugs..

I love the descriptions of the pricey options..

With ancient roots this ikat pattern design couldn’t be more modern. Inspired by tradition this design packs a punch of personality by utilizing vibrant colors to create a look that fashion forward and unique. Unsurpassed in quality and style without sacrificing affordability, Karastan’s woven area and accent rugs are beautiful additions to any room in your home. In addition to their beauty and durability, the rugs are made from superior materials, blending the right colors, textures and patterns to express your personal style.

Relaxed traditional motifs updated with color palettes ranging from classic with heirloom appeal to progressive, spicy combinations provide the Knightsen collection with fresh interpretations of timeless designs. The Knightsen collection of rugs is woven on Wilton looms in the U.S.A. of premium quality nylon yarn to impart a soft hand and dense pile that is durable and easy to clean. Specially twisted and space-dyed yarn gives each rug a multi-hued stria reminiscent of hand-woven rugs.

  • 100% Nylon
  • Rug gripper recommended preventing shifting and sliding, to protect the floor underneath and also to increase the longevity of the rug
  • Made in the USA
  • Fade resistant
  • Rotate your rug periodically; vacuuming is the best way to remove every-day dirt and dust, (special care should be taken in the fringe area as vacuuming with a beater bar can catch and pull the fringe, causing separation), professional cleaning recommended
  • Durable and easy to clean
  • Please Note: The digital images and product dimensions on our website are as accurate as possible. Due to differences in computer monitors, some rug colors may vary slightly. Lengths and widths may vary from the published dimensions. We do our best to provide you with an exact measurement, but please be advised that some variation exists. Patterns may vary slightly according to shape and size selected.

Now with all that going on, why would a family with kids and pets want a wool rug?

Id take the Karastan woven wool rug over the cheaper nylon every time. Its simple. After 10, 20 and 30 years. The karastan will still look great even with pets, kids and an army.. the nylon will be done.. and when my kids get it.. 40 or 50 years from now, they will get a great performing rug that still looks good. All the Karastan rugs that come in, no matter the age, if taken care of over the years.. always bounce back beautifully!

But is it the quality of a Hand Tufted Wool Rug?

Weaving the attributes of the copied product into a story is a time-honored way of sucking in the aspirational buyer that wants a high-dollar look at a discount price. These are pricey for Wilton woven rugs though, and probably at the very top of the price range for an HD shopper. Very likely a better rug than most of the off-shore product.

Notice that few rugs, even traditional patterns, come with fringe anymore?

The new Karastan design language is to take a small section of a traditional look and blow it up.

I give them points for creativity.
