our customer stored this rug in the basement and has some mildew stains on it Matted down pretty bad where it was wet. We were told do what ever we can do or they are going to trash it looks like a nice rug would be nice to be able to help them out. Any ideas on what to do . Thanks Again Randy Day

Is it dry and cracking? If you send it to me I will have it evaluated by one of my rug restoration specialists and give a price for restoring if practical.

Mildew doesn't affect wool much, but can leave stains. It will damage the cotton foundation though, so the rug probably has an odor and will be weak in the areas of mildew. How weak depends on how long the mildew has been working on it, so the test is to push on those areas and listen for cracking sounds. If you hear some, or worse if you can push your finger through, the rug could use some repair before being put back in use.

The type of repair would depend on the amount of damage and how much money the owner is willing to invest.

Randy:

Call me. I'll send you something to try on it. One of my customers who does a lot of oriental rugs calls it his "secret weapon".

You have the number.
