Well from my understandin there are two types of sitemaps.
One is for your prospects so they can see all the pages from your website. In my opinion this one is not really important to SEO. It just makes it easier for prospects if they have something specific they are looking for. But if your site layout is good, you shouldn't really need one.
The other one is the one that Search engine robots pick up so that they can index all your pages correctly. This one is the important one because a lot of times Google can pick up your homepage but if you don't have a sitemap submitted to them, then that's the only page they pick up.
Google even offers a service for webmasters where you can create sitemaps, submit them, and see how your site is being picked up by google
