Custy wants to paint and somehow finish an old VCT floor.

My gut says its a bad idea????

Could you strip the floor?? Paint it? Then epoxy coat it??? Instead of putting lots of time or $ into tearing up VCT and properly restoring concrete.

Or is he just stuck with stripping and waxing the VCT??

Remember they think my $250 price is expensive to Strip and Wax the 375 sq ft there lol.

It's the old 9 Inch tiles also.

9x9 usually means asbestos.............So I wouldn't rip it up

nor would I want to prep it to the point it would probably hold the paint.

strip and straight to epoxy might work.......but I'd let them do it :D

Yep we've painted 9x9 that customer requested. Looked ok. "We" (thanks Justin) also decided not to do it in the future.

It was in the basement of a 1950's home next to a growing business strip. Despite the elderly owner's wish to restore the home, it will likely be bulldozed shortly after she dies. The lot is more valuable empty.

Run, don't let this become your problem. You strip the floor and it's asbestos and you chip up one pc they will own you for remediation. If they want to paint it have them call a painter.

epoxy paint isn't cheap

you shouldn't have to strip to paint over it.
Clean it with a black pad (that should scuff the surface)
make the the first coat of paint a bonding primer .
Then top coat with a quality latex floor paint like Sherwin Williams Armorseal

Oh you CAN polish a turd. The 9x9 paint job was a personal example. I just postponed her problem for her heirs to handle.

not if you use good quality floor paint .
porches, steps and basements get painted all-de-time

as far as chipping and flaking, that's contingent on the foundation you're covering .
if the floor is solid (no flaking finish or chipped tiles) just clean and scuff it, apply bonding primer then the top coat of paint

The only thing that would change that, was if the floor was waxed with paste wax..then it should be stripped for best adhesion .
if acrylic floor finish, clean/scuff 'n go

Please note to make your custy aware..it's going to look like just what it is.... painted tiles..you'll still see every individual tile

Don't do it. It will look awful. I did it because I'm a doofus. It looked horrible.

But she was satisfied enough to call us again a year later. I cleaned the other carpet, and told her we could do no more with that tile, unless she wanted an asbestos contractor to remove it.

I suggested she cover it with carpet, or call Justin to paint it again :-)
