On discussion boards, I've found it a good practice when referring to members or authorities in a given discussion to spell out the name in the first reference and then abbreviate afterwards so that any questions regarding who/whom is referenced can be found without needing to ask. I understand, of course, that that may not be necessary when it's assured that anyone participating in the discussion is already familiar with the given references; however, for new members, it's difficult to follow a conversation when the lingo is so exclusive. I don't consider initials acronyms unless the referenced person/character is very well known in a general sense and is generally accepted as an expression such as an exclamation.
