Experience Raffle Alternative?

The raffle had a big return this year and the room was packed. It was great to see so much money raised for rescue animals.

However, I'm wondering if the give away might be better supported using the auction format? The only problem with the raffle is that participants feel that some are "buying" the prizes by purchasing more tickets and moving the odds in his or her favor. The auction would give everyone an equal opportunity to win and still - in theory - raise significant money for the cause.

You could also allow for virtual bidding by those not in attendance via Skype, MB chat or some other platform.

Just an idea.

I'd like to hear the thoughts of Lockheart, Tom and Martin, Eckman and others who always buy a bunch of tickets.

I think it could be fine either way.

But I don't care for the guys that use just free tickets not understanding that this is a charity event.

I PERSONALLY LOVED IT WHEN THE SAME GUY KEPT WINNING THE PRIZES!!

It showed he had deep pockets and supported the cause no matter if it was to actually help the animal society or win the prizes as it was a win,win anyway.

Charity has been and always will be a good rewarding experience, some just feel duped when they don't physically win a prize, not understanding that winning the prize should of been just a side note, and not the goal.

The goal is to raise awareness and if possible money while participating in an event that could raise money for a particular cause.

Most bizness owners (better to say most people) don't understand charity or giving back. It doesn't have to be money, time works just as well.

Could there be an auction format, yes. Would it take even longer to complete the raffle, A LOT LONGER.

We would need about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the raffle. And the results would be the same.

The guy who brings a 5-10 thousand dollar check to the party is still going to take the prize. This process could anger or frustrate some suppliers/distributors. as every year a smart business man could just wait for the MB RAFFLE charity event and buy all his MEDIUM DOLLOR ticket items during the auction giving himself and his business a huge tax break while supporting a good cause. AND TRUST ME I WILL ATTEMPT TO BE THAT SMART BUSINESS MAN!!

At least with the ticket format the process has some excitement and really speeds the overall raffle event up.

Mike is there anyway that you can just keep the money that Lockhart donates but not put his tickets in? I mean he said its its not about the prizes for him, so obviously he doesn't care if he wins or not.

He did that last year.

There was a snafu-more than half of my tickets were in the rotovac xl tub and were accidentally dumped into the discarded ticket bucket. I didn't win as the ticket was pulled from the main discard bucket, and it was fine.

No reason to get butt hurt while trying to help with the bigger picture.

As much as I appreciated the money for the benefactor, I felt it really brought down the whole "experience" of the raffle...


I like to see people get all worked up and celebrating over their win. Eric, the winner is a great guy, but he won so much stuff he couldn't keep up.

Break the auction into 3 categories small medium and large ticket items. Small dollar amount tickets a buck each, medium, $10.00 each, and large ticket items $20.00 per ticket. A $3000 item shouldn't be going for the same ticket price as wall guards.

The auction is a good idea to because it will double or triple the revenue for the charity for sure.

But I do love the way excitement of the draw to.

It will come down to how long it takes to execute the auction.

As it stands right now the raffle already is a good 1.5 hour long event, add an auction to it and it will simply double the time it takes - all while creating a more chaotic winner claiming process.

But again I am just a janitor.

What's awsome about me since I was young, is that I don't care what negative people say about me.

I try to do everything to the best of my ability, while trying to follow all the rules and make the most out of every situation.

The results have never bothered me as long as I try to do everyhting the best and right way.

If I can help raise some money while having a great chance and a good time possibly winning something, then I am all in.

So yes if I can get multiple "birds" with "one stone" then I will do it.

First Mikey and all the folks who donated and worked their collective asses should be given a huge THANK YOU! I can't say thank you enough to everyone who gave back. Without efforts like these to raise funds for these groups many more good, deserving pups wouldn't have a chance. Barry Costa raised hundreds for Leukemia by getting donations for a picture with the show girls. It was also pretty cool that a young cleaner from Bulgaria who purchase just 10 tickets won a beautiful $800.00 wand. If you want a better chance start giving back; it's called karma. Thanks again Mikey and to everyone who participated.

You could always LIMiT how much money good people could donate to a wonderful cause so a bunch of cheapskates can walk away with free prizes

Based on the figures here, a donation of $500 or more offered you a high probability of receiving a greater than 2-1 return on your investment

We do that for he items donated for an event we do at my kids school. It works out well.

We color code the tickets to correspond with he gifts based in value. Higher the value, higher cost of the ticket.

Not a bad idea to have higer value items have a higher ticket charge. Tickets could be $1, $5, $10, $20 or $25, $50, $75 and $100 each.

We also do a 50/50. Always a big draw cause we sell tix for $1 each, 6 for $5, 12 for $10 etc. people love cash and winning 1/2 the pot.

I have spent the day (as I worked....) thinking up alternatives that would make the distribution of prizes more even, but every one would reduce the funds raised to donate, kind of defeats the purpose.

The fact is, even if you buy just one ticket, you have a chance to win, and are contributing to a good cause.

I think the raffle went pretty good. I think it would really complicate things if we change it to a different dollar amount for larger prizes for everyone putting on the raffle, I could not donate as much as I would have liked but I ended up with 150 tickets to put in the buckets, it would be really hard to decide how that would be split up if I wanted big ticket prizes versus small ticket prizes. The ultimate goal of this whole thing was to raise money for the animals and if I didnt win anything I would have been happy because I was able to help with my donation. I did like being able to pick what prizes I wanted to put my tickets in for the drawing.

what if once you won you couldn't win again until x number of others won first.
So if Lockhart won ( i strongly suggest not allowing Mr Lockhart to partake) then 4 more people must win before he is eligible to win again.

This would guarantee more individuals a chance at winning and yet still allow money bags...I mean Lockhart and chance to get his charitable groove on.

Any kind of limiting I believe will also limit the amount being donated
