Giving up secrets

I get some commercial clients that peep my products, and then want to know what I use, even so far as to ask where do I get it.
Do you hide the product. Or just tell them your secret?

It's fun when they call a few months later and demand that you replace all of their carpets because of the product -you said you were using- bleached everything out.

Never show them the products or how you do things. Or tell or show the janitors anything. They all want to show the building owner how they can save money by letting them do it. And make money off the side.

when people ask what I use I emphasize that the products (without listing names of them) can only be used with truck mounted equipment as it will damage lesser equipment or damage the carpet, tile, etc if used in correctly. I also throw out a quick line of "you have to become a certified" to use the products.

seems to scare away any people who are potentially interested in short cutting you.

I openly and willingly tell everyone that asks about Roto-Static Magic. Continuous use spanning five decades, and never having had to haul around a van load of the next best thing. I giggle alot at the rolling meth labs I see in here and there.

We have never been asked by a commercial client. And very rarely by a residential....if they were to ask, I would tell them that the products we will be using are designed for TM steam cleaning and that we use different product for different soil types and levels of soiling.

Just strap on a full face mask respirator and walk inside with the sprayer. and ask, "where did you say it was the worst".

Hahaha! We used to have a tech that wanted to wear a respirator because he was worried about the products. I asked him how he thought that would make the customer feel....we got a good laugh out of it. Needless to say, he didn't work for us very long, guys like that scare me lol...

Our commercial account has a book labeled "The Right to Know" with all chemicals, detergents etc on the premises mounted on the wall next to the entrance loaded with MSDS etc.

Some commercial buildings are very environmentally conscious and will require you be the same. I respect that. And if they really need to know the exact products I guess you have to show them. I wouldn't be worried about them later trying to DIY it.

I had an apartment complex that I cleaned at. We all knew that corporate office was on them to buy their own extracter and have maintenance clean the carpet as they did in the rest of the company. Maintenance guy resisted for awhile until he was told clean it yourself or be fired. (He was let go shortly after my last apartment) I got called to clean a really nasty apartment and a couple of maids came in to see how well I was doing at it, (saving the carpet of course), It was nice to show off for people at how good I was. Until the entire maid staff showed up to see it, I realized oh shoot, this will be the last time I am here. The next day I took the stickers off my rotovac and have never been back to that complex.

I always break down the terminology to a level they can't understand such as :synethic cohesive polymers with anti static properties that allow these molecular bonds to let go which in turn allow the alkaline surfactant to literally shear off the layer of gross filth that is bonded to the carpet fiber.
