OK I came across some shag carpet which had heavy foot traffic. I have many chemicals that did a good enough job for the customer. I, being a learning professional, cannot accept good enough. I was wondering what you guys suggest for heavy foot traffic?

on shag, A nice tan to brown frieze style carpet and a proper install job. Sorry I could not resist. I have only cleaned a shag carpet once and I hope to never do it again.

Vacuum by hand with open hose pipe pipe pipe

Mist and vac grandi groom lightly, pass if there's pet stains.

Actual nylon shag is not to hard to clean lose the glide and go to work

Run into wall to wall shag at least once a week. It's all the rage again with decorators. I use the hoss to flush it out. Works like a charm. You have to pull the spray bar out a couple of times but it only takes about 20 sec. To unclog.

Issues with cleaning shag wall to wall carpeting:
  1. Impossible to vacuum well on location + Owners can't vacuum it well either. In other words it will have a huge soil load (buildup) at the very bottom. Always will require a lot of extra vacuuming that will still not achieve optimal results. Price it in, and plan for much longer vacuuming time. Consider it a meditation- Enjoy :winky:
  2. Due to more fiber, it will absorb more moisture than a shorter pile carpet. As a result drying time may be an issue. Therefore it requires many more dry passes and will greatly benefit from using a fan and creating optimal drying conditions.
  3. The fiber is wearing on all sides, lays on it's side and moves around. That and the fact that good vacuuming is practically impossible, translates into heavy wear (scratching of the carpet) and a different wear (more on the side and less at the tips of the fiber) than usual carpeting. A substantially different wear pattern as compared to the usual cut pile. It also mats substantially more. End results will reflect these issues.
Therefore it benefits from being conservative with the pre-spray (gets it wetter) and lowering psi, more clean passes at lower psi and many dry passes etc.

The chems are the same (depending of course if synthetic or wool) the application is different.

Understanding these issues and practicing your communicating skills, so that client understands the limitations in advance, may contribute to better long term business relationship not to talk about better sleep at night :winky:

Someone seem to have the illusion that buying all these tools will make his employees less hackish.

Hell, no. Say, there was a Dan in your company, tell him it's still the same old hacks and attitude, just with better looking equipment :winky:.

First, cut that pesky pile with a tiny lawn mower...

Seriously, I appreciate Ofer's answer. I have tackled shag with the DP420 Duplex, with pretty good results. It was a bit slow, but the crb curried it well and the customer was delighted.
