I have never been an IICRC apologist, and in fact am often an outspoken critic of the IICRC. My criticisms of its training model predate the latest furor over late test results by nearly 10 years now.

If there has been something about the IICRC that has frustrated you, or that you have truly disliked, I have been right there with you.

That said, if you are a Certified Firm and/or a Master Cleaner or Restorer, you should have received the latest edition of “The Journal of Cleaning, Restoration, and Inspection”.

The Journal has always been good, but this issue in particular in both its new format and especially its content, represents its best effort yet.

More importantly, The Journal represents everything that is RIGHT about the IICRC, and long with its great instructors (which I am no longer one of, to be clear), best fulfills the promise of what the IICRC was meant to be, and can be once again.

To its editor, John Downey, I will say this:

You created the finest industry magazine when you founded Cleanfax so many years ago. What you’ve done with The Journal proves that a man can truly improve on excellence. I am proud to be your friend.

I have such deep respect for you Jim that you could tell me to jump and I will ask how high.
We dropped our company certification a while back but are individually certified. My husband is a Master cleaner but we did not receive this magazine.
I will check out the digital version.

my biggest beef is that there is no communication with certified tech's. I wrote and passed and received certification in several category's but because I'm not a certified firm I'm guessing, I have never received any communication from them to continue my education, inform me of courses nearby, or that I need to renew my certification or anything. It's like we don't count. So why bother anyway.

The IICRCA was managing several programs for the benefit of the Certified Firms. Those were cancelled when the IICRC pulled funding. A buying program, an insurance program and a scholarship program that offered $200 per year per CF in education money.

The Certified Firm looking for benefits might try contacting the Certified Firms Chairman to see what the future holds.

The Journal is truly excellent.
And the new IICRC Directors are going to kill publication of the print version. No telling what an on-line version would look like.

The IICRC also nearly killed the entire Journal, and even this decision is still one that marginalizes one of their best products.

The service of the company that handles their administration has been abysmal. You would think they'd do all they could to improve their PR when they need it the most.

Believe me, for me to make a post in praise of them at this stage of the game is very difficult. But the information in The Journal has always been very good, science rather than opinion/anectdotal, and for all of that, easy to read. That's the work of great contributors and insightful editing. John Downey's ability to gather the first and skillfully do the second is what made Cleanfax what it was. The IICRC's board decisions to marginalize if they can't "kill" The Journal is myopic to the extreme.

I guess this did turn into a criticism of the IICRC.....

I know this post won't reach "the board", but nonetheless I needed to share my thoughts.

I agree there has been great content in the Journal. The proble has been that so few read the Journal!

No readers means no or few advertisers. This is what really killed the Journal. I hope afew more will start to read and support the few advertisers who support the magazine.

I agree. Maybe it could also be said that "the problem has been that so few read....anything"

I am getting extra copies to pass out in our next few classes, and am going to talk to the students during break about what's within the pages.

This won't be the first windmill that I've tilted at....and I'm prepared for the same fate as Don Quixote for my efforts. Its a fitting task for an aging man to fight for a lost cause I suppose.

As we speak Mikey anon and I are working on a new Publication

It's going to be the industry standard with various contributing writers

Our first edition will feature an editorial column by James Ladwig titled "Squirrels, how to capture and cook them when they've entered your customers home"

Look for it in late 2016

Wouldn't digital reduce the costs substantially?

That's true, and acceptable if that's what it takes to preserve it. Still, there are a number of people who will only skim something on line, and jump off the moment they get a FB alert...

There is also something to be said for a tangible "in hand" item that can be shared among employees and colleagues. Yes, I know it can be forwarded too, but again, people seem to have a more difficult time focusing when they read on line versus on paper.

Or maybe that's just me.

I agree Jim... Digital can be very distracting and harder to share. It's nice to have if you want to refer to it while out and about but a hard copy will certainly give more focus.

The Journal was envisioned as a scientific magazine, untainted by by industry politics or advertising. It was to be paid for from the money that Certified Firms pay to the IICRC each year - to give them something for their money.

No Journal, no Association, no scholarships...

So where's your money going now?
