Some call it burping the wand. I think that's a stupid term, so I'm just gonna call it...uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh "breaking the connection". There. That makes me sound smarter

Anyway, a couple of you genius MB members brought it to my attention on a terrible video I just made of me swinging a wand on some commercial carpet, that I'm doing it wrong by picking up my wand in between passes.

I always figured it was best to do it both ways, depending on they type of carpet. If it was a thick nap of residential carpet, I leave it connected to the carpet. With commercial office carpet, I always broke the connection or "burped" it, to help empty the hose.

If you didn't see the video in my Zipper racing thread, here's what I"m talking about:

I have never heard of anyone doing that and I'm sure if I did that... I would last about one day back in the Carpet Cleaning world. My lower back began to hurt just watching this. Your truck mount already has the pressure relief built in so you can stop doing that lifting of the wand thing now...while you still have lower back muscles that work :-)

My wand stays stuck to the ground and with my swivel, i overlap my strokes with ease. My back tells me what to do and it says not to pick up the wand if i dont need too.

NOOO don't pick up the wand....
except to "crack" it a little as you get to the wall
this creates a "vortex" that sucks the edge clean

i notice that some of yous bozos pull parallel to the wall....first pass is alwez the facing the edge doing the whole perimeter like you doing in a coloring book..then fill in the undone space

the next ? will be is it professional or not to leave the triangle aka shark tooth in the carpet
my little 'ol black ladies would beat me to death if they didn"t get their triangles...of course you have the overlap that last triangle so you wont leave half a triangle wet

I find it easier on my back to lift the wand on the dry stroke just a little to get it moving the other direction. Some carpets are just to thick to push the wand through.

Bob, how tall are you? Im 6'5". Whether or not i pick it up, you'll always see me hunched over a bit. It's a curse we tall guys have.

And on commercial carpet,...how can the water get extracted efficiently if there's no air pushing it?

Please don't tell me you use one of those sissy slotted glides

I was most of my life 6'3 but back has been so damaged I'm now 6'2. So on the tall side even so. I would say if you have to hunch over then you need a custom wand. Really Matt I'm just trying to help because it will catch up to you. The worst part is it will happen in a single moment. Followed by years of pain...worst when you first get started then as your day goes on it sort of goes away...usually.
The wands you guys are using are quite a bit lighter than the ones we used and the Zipper is really a god send for longevity and being able to keep good posture etc. I'm the short one in my family... uncles 6-5 and 6-4. Of course you have to pick up the wand to leave the room or position it for edges etc. Just not every time you reach your back stroke.

Maybe I'm a short guy at 6-4, but I stand up straight when cleaning and am adamant about teaching proper ergonomics to our techs. Two that came from other companies stand straight now - after having shoulder surgeries to repair the damage done by hunching over.

Have the wand tube extended if that's what it takes, because poor ergonomics will make you an old man before your time.

I've cleaned acres of commercial carpet. No glides to make pushing the wand easier, but certainly no wand lifting to make it harder. If air isn't moving through your wand when on the carpet you need to see what's wrong with your airflow.

No, you are not doing it wrong. Just different... However, every time you break the seal(pick it up) it takes a little time for the vacuum to build back up. Not long, maybe a half second, but done 1k times a day adds up to a lot. So, on your push forward " crack wand and slide" your vac is a little less(while it builds). This is how it was explained to me.

At the same time it's also good to "clear the hose" every now and again. Seems to help when loaded with foam.

Whatever works...! I was simply busting your balls(other thread)........

Since you're not using glides, and your wand is locked down on that carpet, physics tell me that the water in your hose is going a lot slower than the water in my hose.

There's days when I feel like I'm standing up straight, like the day I made that video. I thought I was standing up just fine until I saw that video.

If you're depending on the pressure relief only at the truck mount, then your dry times are going to be less than you want it to be, because the pressure is being relieved at the blower. If the pressure relief is at the wand, in other words lifting it, then that helps get the water out of the hose faster, increasing suction
