We all have different ways to define how successful we are as carpet cleaners and businessmen. I have one customer who has sold her house and is downsizing to a condo. I have been cleaning carpets in that house since 1990. I was first sent to that house as a subcontractor to repair damage that an employee of a local department store, had done to a white wool carpet. I couldn't get it 100% back to what it was but the lady was so impressed with the effort, she kept me on as the regular carpet cleaner. She sold the house a few years later but left a letter and my business card for the new owner. I have been cleaning for the new owner for 20 years. The new owner is going to do the same and we'll see if I continue as the carpet cleaner. I will never be the successful businessman but to me success is the fact that customers go the extra mile to keep me on and recommend me to friends and relative.

Time well spent without working. You can always make money but you can never get time back.

Jimmy's words of wisdom, a local carpet cleaner died around Christmas. Went to dinner got sick went to bed and never woke up.

Claude of Parris carpet care.

At first they had a message saying he was deceased. His customers loved him!

Now people call and say they keep calling and there's no answer.

My son feels guilty were making money off someone else's tragedy.

I explain we get to tell his story, share his other customers miss him as well, and even though I only met him once he was a nice guy.

Success is defined by each person completely different. Success could be something as simple as standing up on two feet and walking, after years of therapy (ask my son)....which is pretty much taken for granted otherwise.

Success can be building an empire like Microsoft and becoming Bill Gates.

Success can be anything, if you reach your goal in what you set out to do.

Success for me could be defined as calling my own shots. This business has let me earn money and work long crazy hours both day and night...but, I never missed one of my kids recitals, lessons or event in their lives. I've never had a specific time I'm required to take a lunch break or have I ever needed someones permission to take a break...or vacation. Of course lunch was usually eaten in the van driving from one job to the next but I could have scheduled time to stop and eat at a restaurant...sometimes I did. I visited Santa Barbara a few years ago and a lady ran up to me and hugged me...I recognized her, a customer I had, she was choked up and said that she missed me...the people I sold my business to weren't nearly as good as I was. That was nice. A month ago here in Florida a lady that was getting her dog introduced to search and rescue, my hobbies, training dogs and horses, told me I use to clean Retirement Homes for her and would I please go back to into business because she hasn't been able to find anyone that does as good a job. I have owned very big nice homes, way too expensive cars and toys...ultimately success to me is my kids turned out OK and a few people appreciated what I did for a living. Excited to go back into the Carpet Cleaning Business again and on my own terms...as usual.

The definition and or meaning of Success, has changed quite a bit over the years.

When I was younger I thought being successful was having new cool toys like new cars and trucks, boats and stuff like that but as I started accumulating my "successful" trophies I noticed it wasn't the stuff that made me happy, it was time I spent with the people I care for that made me happy and kept my drive strong.

Don't get me wrong I like having nice stuff, but if you don't have time to use it, and use it in a way you enjoy in a manner that enriches your life, why work so hard?

So know I try to balance my time and work, taking as much time as I can with my family and trying to enjoy it as much as I can.

And more words of wisdom by Jimmy AKA ............Ninja Warrior.

When you DIE the only people who will remember you are those adults and grand children around you now. AFter that your legacy and memories cease to exist.................and you will forever be just pictures in a box. Future relatives will look thru them one day and ask who who is that in the picture..................then not knowing.............they will simply throw that box of pictures in the dump.

So success is short lived...................means absolutely ..............nothing

I agree success is a feeling that comes from within and it only means something to you.

It is also going to be defined differently for all people. A man can be a success with one truck or feel like a failure with 10 trucks. It’s all how you think and feel about yourself that allows you to feel successful or not.

The main thing is not to allow others to control the bar of success that you judge yourself by. You can let them motivate and influence you in order to accomplish your goals. However don’t buy their version of what success is unless it aligns with yours.

Remember dinosaurs ruled this great earth for some 175 million years. Yet the vast numbers of people consider them a failure. Don’t try to impress people, you’ll always end up disappointed. : )

P.S. Oh one final comment… You’re a fookin loozzer if you run a porty, no matter what you may say or think.
You know it, I know it, the world knows it. Its UNDENIABLE!

Brilliant, except for the comment on the porty. I do some of my best work with a porty. Granted, it's no ordinary porty and I do have heat as well but I would put my porty cleaning side by side with any truck mount out there and whup their ass but good.
