Talked to a few in the know, turns out some years very few candidates are nominated (less than 10) so maybe a few forms from Team Saiger may just do it.

To understand what they are looking for in a nomination, someone should go back and find the article in cleanfax or ICS about Ralph Bloss, what he did for the industry and how he tried to help newbie carpet cleaners succeed.

The award is great, as was Ralph, it's the voting process that I have issues with.

I'd like to see Clean Fax run a poll on the elected candidates along with their stories and let the people and real carpet cleaners vote. Many years they get so few nominations that the winner is quite possibly not all that deserving, just the best of who was submitted.


It's the age of the internet, lets hip this process up a notch or ten.

As it is , its an electoral college process, which I'm sure you/John take issue with on years your man doesn't win.

John Olson nailed it. If you take a quick glance at the past recipients of the award there are likely several names on there that you have never heard of. There are others that are well known throughout the industry. Just take the five minutes and nominate the person who you think deserves it - but take some time to find out what they do in their community too.
The gentleman who originally put this award together had been a long time friend of my father. But what really motivated him to get this award going was what he experienced at my father's funeral. There were a lot of cleaners and restorers in attendance. Many representatives from vendors and suppliers from the industry. He expected all of that. What overwhelmed him was what he learned about what my father did in addition to what he contributed to the cleaning and restoration industry. Things he did not even know about - everything from working with a children's camp to involvement in the community he spent the last years of his life in in Estes Park, Colorado.
I am sure there are many "members" of Mikey's Board who have a lot in common with that. They assist cleaners and restorers all the time. But they also have a life away from our crazy but fun industry. They have causes they believe in. They have everyday challenges they face with their special needs children whom they love and adore. They do tremendous work within the faith they are belong to. Their wise counsel goes well beyond helping you and I find better ways to get cat pee out of carpet. Suicide prevention. Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Fighting that heinous cancer thing. And you and I may think we know someone only to find out they live a whole other life they don't report on here. They do it because it is the right thing to do.
One quick bit of advice. Feel uncomfortable calling up someone and asking them about their humanitarian efforts away from the industry? Just call their company and talk to their receptionist, or one of their technicians. They will know what they do. That is where most of the information comes from that the committee has to go on. Joe, thanks for bringing the subject up! Thanks for letting people know how much you appreciate Mark Saiger and the contributions he makes.

The winner is chosen by a committee consisting of all of the past winners (who by the way, take their role extremely seriously and everyone of them dating back to 2003 stays involved), Jeff Cross from Cleanfax (added when Cleanfax took over the presentation of the award) , Jennifer Wilkinson from the Experience (added when Cleanfax took over the presentation of the award), and myself. My brother and mother (who turns 86 tomorrow) do not participate in the selection, but always enjoy learning more about the winners. Once someone is nominated, if they are not selected as the winner that year, their nomination is carried forward so long as they are still involved in the industry. There are several people who have received nominations from multiple people over a period of years.

I am nominating Mr Saiger because not only do I believe or speculate, but because I know without a doubt in my mind that no other person in our cleaning industry spends as much of their time helping out new/young cleaners.
Long before Mr Saiger had anything to sell, he would spend many hours a day on the phone, writing emails and on online groups guiding those in need. Whether it be technical assistance, marketing or employee issues, Mark will help out those in need in an almost instant manner. Mark is known for bringing two vans to his job sites, one is for his working crew and one is for him to sit in and answer calls and emails. The truth.

And even today, with his Saiger line of products, he continues to do the same, regardless if there is a sale involved. Please keep in mind that he makes a whopping $6.00 per case of his branded chemicals on average.


What specific charitable and community events, organizations, and issues have the nominee contributed to or been involved with that do not provide any remuneration (compensation) directly to the nominee or his/her company? *

Lets start with his You Tube channel which consists of primarily helpful tutorial type videos. 1,348 subscribers • 714,467 views 692 videos

Countless "ride alongs" given to young cleaners at no charge.

Countless hours on my forum and Facebook staying out of the drama and posting almost all helpful content.

At least two hours a day on the phone or emailing fellow cleaners in need.

Being a crew leader at my charity cleaning events.

Speaking at many cleaning industry shows with nothing to sell.

Takes phone calls from Marty Sutley.


How has the nominee provided assistance or help to members of their community? *

Mark provides free or heavily discounted cleanings for many non profits and churches in his local community as well as free cleanings for seniors in need, other than that, I'm sure he helps old ladies across the street and buys cases of girls scout cookies.

Explain any activities in which the nominee has helped other professional cleaning and restoration companies in the industry? *

and I'll say this, twice now Mark has been promised airfare reimbursement if he would come speak at a popular cleaning industry event, and twice now he has not been paid back. When asked why he does not say something he replies back, "I just want to help the industry..."

Mike - thanks for making your nomination. Hopefully others have nominated someone too. Although all of the recipients are certainly deserving, I would agree with you it would always bring a special smile to my father's face when "just a good ol'carpet cleaner" wins it. Of course, as far as I know, everyone on this list was just a "good 'ol carpet cleaner" at one time.
