Why not cram it to either side for more free space?
Good question. I guess I should have hung around for the installation to supervise. The heater was supposed to go further back to help keep the pilot light out of the wind better and allow space for a chemical rack on the passenger side. Might have to do some rearranging. If the headpack was moved to the other side it would be a great spot to slide my spotting machine into.
Do you need access to both sides of the unit to do oil changes?
That's an interesting choice. After using mainly propane heated units for the last 30 years, I tend to drool a little when I see well engineered hx units like the Prochem legend. What kind of problems did you have your last hx machine that drove you back to propane? No, everything is accessible from one side. It will be nice when the time comes to change the belts or replace the blower or motor. Plenty of room to work without standing on my head. Having room for my portable to ride with me everyday could be a problem but I don't use it but once or twice a year.
After using an overcomplicated heat exchanger machine for 14 years my goal was to find something simple and well built without all the doodads that go bad. TCS designs some good stuff, and they are available at my local distributor.

I am the same way. I designed my unit to be simple and to be able to replace components easily. Although it can be a pain to have a second fuel for the heater, it is reliable and easy to work on. I have rebuilt the engine once and replaced the lg heater once in the last 14 years. The original lg heater was already 10 years old before I built this unit. Still on the original pump and blower. It was a great machine after I stripped it down to just the motor, blower, pump and heat exchanger. The White Magics were on a well built frame and water tanks but the plumbing and electrical were a nightmare. I took it to Sunbelt one time for a problem and the technician closed the van doors and said "I can't work on this thing." The original installer retired so since I'm pretty good at turning wrenches I was able to keep it running all those years once I pulled off all the unneeded stuff.
I came close to buying a Sapphire, but after reading about all of the quirky little problems on their facebook page I thought I might go with something simpler. I heard from one mechanic that to replace the belts on the rage many times the whole console had to be removed from the van. I have always believed that simpler is better. My distributor is an hour away and I would rather have something I can work on easily. I'll still keep my old rig as a backup.

Nice. Mine is the 1600 psi version. Unfortunately my old cat 290 only gets up to about 700 psi. Will replace it one of these days when it finally craps out.Awesome! I plan on completely rebuilding the White magic and using it as a backup. I replaced the motor a few years ago. I got over 10,000 hours out of the first one. Never replaced the Cat pump. I did replace the blower but the main bearing is going bad again, it was a used blower I bought from a Mikeys board member. I may add an LG heater since there is no heat control on the heat exchanger and it has a huge exhaust leak.
It's going to be nice to have some serious heat again. They included the HP version of the heater so I can clean tile too.
My Judson had very easy to replace belts too.
Good thing as they were getting replaced often.
Nearby heat sources were taking thier toll
