Last Thursday while I was driving to Jim Fest a long time SCruz repeat calls in a panic. Their new maid mistakenly used Bona Wood FURNITURE polish on their floors and now they are falling non stop. No good considering they're in their 70s or 80s. She uses a walker and he's on oxygen.

Bona suggest they try some heavy duty Bona wood cleaner but she doesn't think they can get down on their knees to do the whole down stairs. I tell her I'm sure we can get it up but can't give her a quote with out knowing what it will take.

We go out of our way to make room on Saturday to get them in, pissing off a new customer in the process and nearly losing a realtor who loves us.

Come Friday afternoon the wife calls and says hubby has pneumonia and has to be rushed to the hospital and sniff, she does not think he's going to live, and she just can't concentrate on wood floors right now...

So sad.






Hubby calls today, Monday, to tell us he used the Bona cleaner and got it all off over the weekend...





probably forgot her story and wanted to brag...

She called Friday at 3 pm to cancel with her sob story, Husband calls and leaves a message that same Friday at 8 pm to say he they got the floors to an acceptable workable situation I think he called it, and did we get his previous message to cancel. My parents work for me at times (it was their business) I call them by first name on the job and I'll introduce them to customers by first name so my customers know their name. Just seems more professional

Ah, I just introduce my mother by saying, "This my mother Michele..." and continue to call her mama.

Clients eats that up. Its far more respectful to say mother or father in presence of clients, imo.

On the point of references such as phone call, etc as to inquire so one know who is who.. that's different.

Ill continue to call my mother mama regardless of the situation.

When I happen to see him in person I call him Dad. But when dealing with business matters referring to him I use his name. Same goes for my mom/Paula.

I have called my father Lee since I started working for him, per his instruction. I have called him Dad at his bed side when he had cancer, when my children were born, and perhaps a few other emotional times on our lives.

In his marketing class, Ed York told a story that was his justification for never giving a "senior citizen discount":

As he told it, he was giving an estimate to a "nice little old lady" in her well kept, charming home. She sweetly asked for a senior citizen discount, and he happily provided one.

Just a few weeks later he got a call from a young single mom who said she needed to have her apartment professionally cleaned or she would lose her deposit when she moved out. He arrived to find the carpet very nice and clean, but of course the landlord was adamant that she have it professionally done, and of course Ed had his company move ahead and clean it. However, he also found out who the landlord was:

The nice little old lady, who so happened to own several homes in the community.

He said that was the last time he gave such a discount.

Of course the story was apocryphal, as most of his were. Over the years I found out that Ed never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

But as most fables have much truth in them, the story was effective, and remains effective, today.
