So I have a tech and two on call helpers!

One who when I hired gives me a $5000 tax credit because of learning disabilities.

He’s a great worker but has real long hair but keeps it in a ponytail.

That was the agreement clean shaven and hair in ponytail.

He’s good with customers too.

His younger brother is about a buck ten, and wears a beanie and his hair was short but now is growing out to.

He looks like I picked him up from a homeless camp.

20 and 24 they live at home with Mom and niether drive.

They use to get dropped off at a meet place Costco Jack in the box somewhere in between me and them and the job.

But Mom got sick with cancer, sold her car and now the only option is pick them up when I need them

I can however drop them off at jack in the box after 3:30 pm, the other brother who drives will get them.

One makes $11 the other $12 an hour both on call part time. But each avg 30-60 hours every two weeks.

Well I messaged the Mom and asked if one could be dropped off tomorrow, and possibly could they work on their appearance?

Stating we go into customers homes and we want to make people feel as comfortable as possible.

Also I may have said they’re starting to look like I picked them up at Home Depot!

Well she messaged back she was sorry I felt like their appearance wasn’t good enough and they would no longer be working for me!

When can they get their last check?

And hopes I can find someone with a better appearance.

I said it’s not how I feel! It’s how they present themselves.

I stated my original agreement with the eldest son, and said I should’ve been more clear with the second.

Lastly this is when it starts to slow down.

And I can always raise my rates a little.

And take two trucks to jobs and team up with my other tech!

It’s nicd having a grunt vacuum and Crb other then that I worry about how customers perceive them!

Also help with furniture moving is huge too!

Will I ever find on call help again?

Probably should have never talked with the mother. Sounds like she took it personally. You need to establish a dress code and abide by it your self.

Only a mothers love.
Ya her Son grew his beard out, and when he shaved she laughed at him and said your not my son!

I don’t get what look they’re going for?

Long hair unshaved videogame virgins!

When I was 18 I pulled it off no beard though, still can’t grow one!

My biggest problem was my son had a beard and was deshoveled, but he was personable and customers loved him.

Customers always ask how long has He been with you?

Ok lastly they were homeless and living with different family members the first year they worked for me.

Now they have a place and the rent is $1600 a month and one brother is full time worker for a gardening service. Plus whatever the Mom gets through Goverment aid!

I don’t see the logic.

Hope they do ok, the youngest talked about joining the navy, but I seriously doubt He will!

I don’t know how on call could work long term. Employees who work for you can be on call, but otherwise people are always gonna have other things to do.

Did a customer say something or raise an eyebrow?

How long have they been with you?

Did you make them wear a company tshirt or wife beater?

Would your wife leave them alone in her master closet?

I’ve heard a few things mostly how long have they been with you!

They generally get a pass because they’re with me or Phil!
How long have they been with you?

Over 2 years and the other a little over a year.
Did you make them wear a company tshirt or wife beater?

Company shirt

Would your wife leave them alone in her master closet?

Probably she knows them, but she wouldn’t want my other lead in the house lol

Honestly every time I get slow I blame
Something!

And I feel it’s not a good look, my complaint is they’re not musicians they play video games and work!

If the look was for some talent they had I might get it.

But just to look like a hippy bandit because in your mind you think it’s cool I don’t get it!

No one has mentioned the real lesson. Dont use text messages for a conversation, especially on a subject that could be offensive. Text messages are great to share information. Not so much to ask someone anything important.
In person someone with good communication skills could like been able to feel her out, or explain it to the boys themselves.

Tell them when to bathe brush their teef and wash their clothes ?

too late now
but in the future...talk your employees ..not their mom

..L.T.A.

Trust is EVERYTHING in this business... If Mrs. Pilfington doesn’t like you, or WHAT you do, you may as well go flip burgers.... I’ve got issues with not only appearance, but how they conduct themselves in a clients home. The only helper I trust is my wife.....

Mothers are rarely objective about their children, especially sons. How many news casts include a mother screaming that her son is innocent while they cart him away with blood on his hands or bodies being dug out of the basement?

I honestly thought she might go to bat for me, but seeing as though neither wants to get a drivers license and anything more then helper status is to much.

I needed to pull the trigger on looking for another lead tech so if and when my other guy bails im not totally screwed.

my hair has always been kept short. i couldn't handle that look on me or techs.

agree as stated above definitely wasn't wise discussing such a situation with these guys mom.

regardless appearance should be addressed when hired, keeps everyone on the same page.

i imagine it also depends on the area you live in regarding long hair and facial hair

I hired the one older brother reluctantly as a fifth back up and a favor knowing he had long hair but woukd keep it in a ponytail.

And be clean shaved. He eventually moved to a full time guy after my son and another kid moved on.

He’s a great helper, but his brother figures if his brother looks like crap so should he!

My fault for not addressing it!
