I gave myself 30min because I knew he couldn’t pay a rug shop price at this govt apartment I cleaned at today.

Not because I think every rug needs immersion cleaning or you’ll be consigned to perditions flames.

I don’t recommend cleaning things with serious dye or texture damage.

Call me a misanthrope, but I have seen too many good cleaners blamed for damage because “it wasn’t THAT bad”, so I have nearly zero trust for people who ask you to do something like this.

Lay it in driveway and soak with their hose. Pour their dawn on it and brush it in. Rinse and leave it to dry.

funniest 1 I saw was a woman rung me up as her dog had peed on her antique rug that she'd bought years ago as a backpacker seeing the world

I turned up couple days later and she'd dragged it outside onto the deck because of the smell. At which point it had seemed a good idea to drop into the pool...

I dont try to restore on a budget/time frame

but once its started bleeding keep the water flowing

You're not going to get the dye bleed out. Nobody is going to get it out, period. Especially on a budget. I usually advise customers to put their trash in the trash.

If I seriously wanted to improve it in a driveway

prespray heavy with a not safe for wool prespray (still wouldnt go nuclear)

175 it (it will bleed more)

pressure wash/blast it until it looks "ok with your good eye closed" then dry stroke

It's not so much how wealthy or poor they are, it's more a state of mind. I had a customer a few years ago that had a rug water damaged from a flood in their condo. I don't do contents restoration, I am working for the strata. The guy says he will pay me directly, so I bring it to the shop, dry it, clean and restore it and redeliver it. He accuses me of tearing the rug. The rug had an obvious tear when I picked it up. I didn't make any notations because it was just an old rug. Eventually, I just told the guy to go pound sand. Got paid for the strata job, never got paid for the rug.
