Going to look at a legend xl in a 2007 Chevy Savanah tomorrow. Very clean unit with 178 kilometers and 1305 hours on the machine. Comes with 300 feet of hoses, several wands, upholstery tools, tile spinner, etc. Machine is installed on a 65 gallon belly tank. $12,000 CDN. Hopefully pictures will follow tomorrow.

You can’t afford a new one?
I could but then I'd be looking at about $70,000 and I would have to cash in some things that are already making me some money. Then in a couple of years I'd have a used unit. This is less than a 1/4 of the price and not even close to being half used up. Minor things, I can take of myself. I think it's a bargain.

Don’t you already have 3 machines and run solo?

you trying to keep up with Damon?
I will sell my dodge and am thinking of selling my little box truck. I hate to sell that one as it makes me money just being parked on the street but it would save another insurance payment and would still leave me with 2 trucks. I can't sell my Astro van as it gets me into all the underground parkades. I am thinking of a part time employee for that truck.

I see it a little differently. I say buy a new tm and put it in a used van or box truck. You can find a mechanic anywhere for your van. Getting a tm with a good warranty and a reputable mechanic at the dealer is more important than the mechanic who changes the water pump on your van

That makes sense for most guys. If you have a truckmount dealer near you for warranty work then I can see that working.

The thing here is, I know the guy who installed the unit, local prochem disty, I know the guy who owns the unit. Been well maintained. Reasonable mileage on the van and exceptional low hours on the legend. I could get by with the units I have now but this is a nice upgrade for a reasonable price.

Afterall, only a idiot would pay full price when he didn't have to.
The best part of owning TMs is the first 5 years for me and the writeoff is sweet. Gov’t would get a third of the cost of the equipment in taxes anyways

I would consider picking up a year old Butler for 25% off new but the fact is that scenario is impossible to find

The only way you’re getting a Butler for half price is when it’s half dead

Well that was a bust. After agreeing to $12000 on the phone, he jacked it up to $14,000 as he said he's got a guy from Calgary offering that much. Sorry, I don't play those games. I guess his word is worth nothing. Too bad, you don't usually see them this clean.

I still can’t wrap my mind around purchasing a 2007 van and TM for a solo operator and somehow this is an ‘upgrade’ in equipment

I understand where you're coming from. My 3 trucks are starting to get a little tired looking and I'm looking at my options. I am at the point where I am considering hiring a full time employee. I would hate to put him in a brand new truck only to have him bang it up. My cleaning units are hot and powerful but 2 are not quite legal for employees due to the gas/propane configurations. Sage for me to use but maybe not for techs. I need to keep my Astro van to get into underground parkades and now am toying with the idea of taking my $12-$15,000 free cash and making a down payment on a new unit. If I did that, it would probably be a Cleanco with high heat and vacuum. That would be my personal unit and I would sell my other 2.

I get both ways. Like anything else, when you’ve operated “cheap ass” because of necessity, it’s hard to break that habit. But, taxes help you break that habit.

Sounds like solid plan , if you have another 10 years in this gig I believe this is your best option

Employees are expensive and a pita everywhere. But again, the tax thing helps you get over it. I barked all this year, hire, hire, hire!!
I hired more than I bought. Again #68

In 1986 I employed a total of 28 people to keep 4 part time positions filled. The next year we started pruning accounts that required them.

My then 14 year old oldest son was my most dependable worker, as were the next 4 as they got older.

Thus ten years ago when I hired again I looked for someone like my boys. So far that has worked.

Most of our career, we averaged 10-12 people. Just before we reached retirement age, which we’re not, God blessed us with tremendous growth.
