I have a CDS 4.8 with a S. Ton of hours on it. I bought it used and has worked great for the last 9 years. Supported my 3 girls after my husband died. Both of my heat exchangers are shot to hell and Jon Don wants a grand each. Kid in college and one about to graduate from high school. 2 grand babies from my oldest. Tough to do. Hoping anyone here might have some advice. I’ll sell my tools before I stop working for my kids. Just need a couple used exchangers or or somewhere to find them cheaper. Sorry for the long thread.

There are many HM CDS units in your part of the country, I'd guess there would be a few salvaged hx parts available . Conserve cash right now.

Did they freeze? Both fail same time?

Freeze damage that was temporarily repaired by braising with copper welding. Surprised it lasted as long as it did. They are both definitely done for.

January of 2016 it got to -22 here. I was feeding cows and freezing my ass off. Heater going in my van. Power went out for 16 hours.. Everything froze. I had to replace a lot. Population 225. I ran my rig until it almost ran out of gas just trying to keep it from freezing. I generally had it purged and filled with Rv marine antifreeze but had an emergency h2o extraction from a water heater. Left there to go pull a calf. I didn’t get out there and take care of my van when I got home. I fed my kids and crashed. My bad. I’m paying for my laziness now for sure.

I’ve explored my options for fixing them. I was just hoping somebody might know where I could find some good used ones or something cheaper than Jon Don . Thanks for all the feedback. Have a great night.

It's always risky buying used ones. You need to see them pressure tested before buying. I know it's pricey but buying new will give you more heat than you had before. I wouldn't call that laziness but it does make for an expensive lesson. A lot of us have done that once.

I keep a small propane portable heater that mounts on top of the propane grill tank. It Is called Mr.Sun and will do the job if the power goes out next time. If you use one crack a window a small bit so condensation doesn't form.

No, just put a fitting on it and pressurize with your truckmount. Not risky at all, pass/fail..

What I meant by looking for a "Plan B" is procuring a SPARE hx, just in case. Especially so if you've already had to repair a freeze damaged unit .

It costs less to do this BEFORE you need it. If you can't afford to plan ahead it always costs more later.

I remember back in the ICS bulletin days. I needed a a cordless sprayer..wanted to try the Multisprayer but didn’t have enough money to spend $400. Went on the board and talked about it.
A day so later I get a call from a fella that was about to retire from carpet cleaning and how this industry had been very good to him. He said I could have his multisprayer and he’d ship it to me. OfferEd him to pay for shipping but refused. To my surprise a few days later I recieved this package in the mail. Opened it and there it was, a used multisprayer. I was floored and quite surprised. No return address or name. It was like an angel. I still have that multi sprayer til this day and it still works.
I could never remember the guys name nor where he lived. That was about 17 yrs ago. That was so amazing and think about that fella every now and then. There are guys in carpet cleaning that have hearts, give genuinely from their heart to help their fello man.
Sir if you Are reading this and remember me, THANK YOU! Thank you for leading the way. You not only helped me in a time of need, but taught me not to be a taker nor selfish, but help another and give and give generously. Thank you man!
