I would be willing to work for free in order to learn.

Any advice on finding someone who would do this? I've thought of reaching out to some Linkedin connections or Facebook but they may not want a stranger.

A business in Montreal of course may have some second thoughts but it has crossed my mind to cross the border to America (nearby) to give someone there a hand for free in order to learn.

Why America? Of course not far and little worry that I would be potential competition for them (as a Canadian citizen...would even show them my passport as proof).

Come on down to georgia. I'll pay you for your time. Just because you're learning doesn't give you the reason to work for free. if you're helping, then you should be paid

Just take a job with one of the larger carpet cleaning companies in Montreal. Don't tell anyone your plans. Learn the equipment, see how they operate, take notes as to what you would do different and when you think you're ready, plunge in.

With the caveat that he may need to unlearn some bad habits.
Hold your horses now Brian! I know that you train your techs well, but some companies don't.

Ideally he should learn from somebody who's really good. It is always better to start with the right foot as it will set his career (at least technically) in a better direction. A critical eye (as Ron suggests) is always a good idea, but harder when you're just starting.

I volunteer Boyle. I am sure he cleans great and if I may speculate, none of his clients dare talk back :winky:

Rumor has it, he's at Butler's headquarters now.

A company like Service Master would be good. I'm thinking that because they use a variety of equipment from truck mounts and portables to vlm equipment like cimexes, orbitals and 175's. They are mainly commercial but it's a good education equipment wise. I'm sure they must have large residential companies there as well. You will learn how to deal with customers, hopefully how to move and block and tab furniture, etc. I mentor a few people out here but don't bring them on ride alongs for my residential customers. I pay them to be a helper on larger commercial jobs. No one really wants to be training their potential competition but at the same time, sometimes it gives you a working relationship with someone that may be in a position to help you at sometime or vice versa. I have a couple of guys that I share work with on jobs that would be too large to handle for just one person. I worked for some terrible companies in the past, low ball bait and switch outfits but it was obvious that I didn't want to be like them. My first venture on my own was after working for 2 years for 2 of those types of companies and we were successful right off the bat. I made the mistake of partnering with my brother inlaw and when he and my sister got divorced, that was the end of it.

Ron!
There's a reason for this obscure button.
Use it, every once in a while.

Good advice, thanks!

I wonder if taking the CCT course alone will get me hired...........
Any idea what Service Master would start me at per hour in Montreal?
I would guess $17 an hour.

Usually they are always looking for fresh bodies. They do restoration as well. Just be presentable, articulate and don't even hint that you want to have your own business. Bring your driver's abstract with you.

Can I apply to Seattle's better?
Pick your fave:
- Sure, we'd love to have you on the team.
- Sure, with your experience we'd probably learn something.
- Sure, Seattle's the same as SanFran, you'd do well. Heck of a commute though.
- Sure, but making money without sweating costs might disrupt your digestion. (Nothing to scare the...)
- Sure, apply and I can avenge the Biden win by crushing your hopes.
