While waiting, if they are capable they can mitigate the damage to their home.

FIRST take pictures. No matter how great a memory they may have, its hard for an insurance adjuster to argue with pictures. Take plenty of them to prove the extent of damage.

Move out all furnishings possible to an unaffected area. Put aluminum foil under metal legs. Block up any wet flat bottomed furniture.

Throw out any wet cardboard, wet cardboard and clothing will give off odor as it dries.

If carpet and cushion are wet, go to a corner of the affected room and using an ice pick or a carpet wall gently remove the carpet from its installation by lifting on the carpet.

Carefully around the tackless strip, lift up the carpet from the pins. They should be able to remove the wet cushion. Use a trash can to haul it out the the road.

Now you are only dealing with the carpet and the wet subflooring which isn't going to hold the water like the pad would. If they have access to a wet vac or a rental carpet cleaner, extract the face of the carpet.

Heat if available should be kept around 72, a dehumidifier would help greatly pull the moisture from the indoor environment. Fans will help expedite drying, the more the better.

Wet or sagging ceilings should be inspected. Generally if its sagging there is water behind it. Place a trash barrel beneath the area before attempting any removal. Once an inspection hole has been cut determine what is wet. If insulation is wet, it should be removed and disposed of.

Removing wet and affected ceiling might seem like the prudent approach however unless they are planning on stapling up poly sheeting as a temperature barrier, they risk making the home colder.

While this isn't all inclusive, it should help move them in a positive direction.

I have family in three cities in Texas.
It's crazy there. Just completely overwhelmed in all restoration industry.

My Uncle can't even find PVC glue to repair his own main. Plus it's too dadgum cold to get it to set early on.

Another point, if an item is water damaged and reasonable not salvageable. Don't dispose of it until after the adjuster gives you his approval. Most adjusters are reasonable people but every company is different in how they handle salvage items.
