I mean the expectations and behaviors of our customers, based upon how the product was marketed and sold.

In the midst of the hard surface revolution, Stainmaster has found another life as Stainmaster Pet Protect.

When you have the time, you need to both read what's presented, and even more, what's implied, in this marketing material.

I have my own thoughts, but would appreciate yours first.

When Stainmaster was introduced, some customers thought it was bulletproof and got really upset when we couldn't make their trashed carpet look like new. I can even remember having customers that NEVER vacuumed their carpet.

I suspect that this new product will have the same type of people buying it.

It is difficult to extract the Petproof as the wand wants to lockdown, even using a glide!

I do not like cleaning it.

The original Stainmaster would wear at the tips and ugly out.

So, are there going to be any restrictions on what chemistry we can use to avoid stripping out the stain resist technology?

I would believe that the restrictions of pH (under 10) and no cationic surfactants would still apply.

Interestingly, the cleaning recommendations now just call for professional cleaning every 18 months. No longer do they mention certified technicians or firms in anything I could find.

I like it! Solution dyed 6.6 nylon? Yay! Gortex-like moisture barrier? Yay! Must be used with similar pad that adds expense? Yay!

This carpet is aimed at people that are pet pigs, but in a higher income range than the rhino-sty polyester customers.

When they find out it still needs cleaning, who they gonna call?

I have think they will quickly find out that nothing is "pet proof".

On top of all the normal small-print limitations, I like that repair or replace "the affected area" is the only option.
  • If INVISTA determines that your claim is covered under one or more of the limited warranties, INVISTA will, at its sole option, determine to repair the affected area of your carpet, or, if repair cannot reasonably be made, INVISTA will determine to replace the affected area of carpet.
  • Cash refunds will not be offered.

Mikey better do something about this!

I recall COIT bringing in Groseclose in to teach us idiots all about Chemspec products that wouldn't void the SM warranties.

Those were likely the high foaming, nearly neutral products that would not, in any way, damage stain resistance...

...and would not, in any way, get the carpet clean.

That's why, in my opinion, the "Less than 10" compromise came about. Most of the "Less than 10" products damaged the stain resistance to a more than expected extent, but got the carpet clean.

I'm most interested with the "Pet Lover Positioning" in their marketing.

This line was one that tells you everything about who they are reaching out to:

"Designed for Adventure

Pets are superheroes, taking the lead in family adventures. When those adventures get messy, STAINMASTER® PetProtect® carpet is ready, featuring built-in stain protection against even the most beastly pet stains. This pet-friendly carpet is color safe and fade resistant, so when accidents happen, you can clean them thoroughly without worry."

So now we have a new name for pet accidents. They are now to be called "adventures"!

Well, to me the whole "pet parent" marketing theme feels condescending to pet owners, but apparently a huge percentage of pet owners see their pets as their children.

Thanks goodness they don't have kids, letting them pee all over the place and just buying pee-proof furnishings.

Unfortunately there are some parents like that. I had a job in a high end condo where the mother was letting her 2 toddlers run around with out diapers.

Just to add some more fuel to the discussion: Warranties are so seldom seen by buyers, and seldom do they match marketing claims.

Heres an excerpt I find especially interesting (Boldface and Italics mine):

These limited warranties also exclude abnormal use or conditions, any type of abuse, vandalism, extreme pet conditions or damage by
smoke, fire, storm, flood, hurricane, wind, lightning, any other natural disaster, or any act of God. INVISTA does not ensure or warrant that
our products will improve health or allergy related conditions. “Abnormal use or conditions” includes, but is not limited to: water damage
from plumbing, storm or flood, damage from smoke or fire, damage from improper cleaning methods or materials, and from improper
maintenance. These warranties do not cover problems caused by wetting or persistence of excessive moisture. “Abuse” is any use of the
carpet that is unreasonable considering the normal and expected uses of a carpet in a residence.
• These limited warranties exclude damage resulting in tears, pulls, cuts, pilling, shredding, burns, bearding, washboarding, cornrowing,
fuzzing, matting, crushing, shading, fading or pile reversal. Improper installation or defective construction are also excluded. Damage
caused by pets such as lingering odors, color change caused by pet vomit or feces, carpet loop or tuft snags and pulls, or damage from
extreme moisture are excluded.

So much for it being "pet proof".

So much for it being "pet proof".

Just like "Stain Proof".

Not that I completely blame them. Can you imagine the nightmare scenarios of multiple large dogs and houses full of cats?

But the marketing...........:icon_rolleyes:

I was a carpet inspector for about a year. I got so tired of visiting hopeful people with what seemed to be reasonable claims and writing reports that I knew would disappoint them.

I remember one Mill tour, Bill Yeadon was there too, where an industry figure held up a carpet sample. It seems it WASN'T bulletproof, as he had blown several big holes in it with a .44.

I saw that same sample, but time doesn't allow me to remember if it was at a mill tour or a show. The late 80s were an interesting time in our industry.

I think that with so little communication between flooring manufacturers and cleaners, and especially the cynicism that arose from those times, that most of this will be a non-issue, unlike 35 years ago.

But its worth paying attention to what your customers think they are getting when they buy this carpet and cushion package.

Its best at about 17 where you see a "pet accident"

I guess it would be tasteless for them to show what we understand to be an "accident'

Put a black light on the carpet I did 2 days ago, it looked like an episode of CSI...
Both him and her were dentists....
My gawd, we had to send her pics, then went full Damon on it.
Can’t complain, a bedroom, and very large loft, and a set of stairs, 830$....
