Get to my afternoon job, right on time. Ring the bell, no answer. Place looks dark so I figure they haven't arrived yet. Go back to my truck and call, no answer. Text him and finally he comes out of the house and says, "we don't need you, we already had it done this morning". I wanted to punch him out but I didn't. Can't believe somebody doesn't have the courtesy to call and cancel. I've never taken deposits but maybe it's time to start.

Be glad you didn't get the job.

Anyone that thoughtless would be the type that could make your life miserable over a questionable damage claim, "chemical odor", or any number of reasons to get a refund, new furnishings, etc.

It still stings when that happens, but in the long run you're better off.

Happened to me twice last year for carpet and once concerning window cleaning...

The window part was the worst. Lady agree to my price to all tracks, screens windows.. so i set up everything and about to start my first window. She comes out to tell me that she doesn't want my service because she called another company that would do it all for 150 bucks.. she had 80 windows about half that with dirty tracks and screen. Tried to explain that it was not realistic but she was so angry as why i was ripping her off and etc and basically told me to fook off before she calls the police. Didnt say another word packed up and left. I was really furious. But im glad i didnt do it. That was a around $980 right there. About 9 mos later she calls asking if i could it all for $600. Turns out she never had her windows done that day. I told her that i will never service her again.

had that happen a couple years ago. I was a bit surprised because it was a long time customer.

Rang the doorbell, customer answers the door only to say that they just did it themselves. Wont service them again, even if they call.

I've never taken deposits but maybe it's time to start.
Send him an invoice for your trouble. He may never pay it. He may even call to complain. Tell him if he had called to cancel there wouldn't be a charge, but you went there and there are expenses incurred doing that.

I fired a customer this week. She scheduled and cancelled last minute about a month ago.

Calls back to reschedule.
On the day I call to confirm, no answer. Her voice mailbox is full. I send a text, no reply. On the day of, I send another call and text. Nothing.
Final text: "I cannot service your place due to lack of communication, and will not provide this service to you in the future due to 2 cancellations and lack of communication"

You did charge or was your labor an time free...
One reason I gave estimates prior to service appt...
Weed em out,clarify mission...
It happens it's shitty but have scenario plans in place for twits like these...
