Imagine being able to take a picture of a rug when the homeowner isn't looking and it tells you it's origin, age, fiber content and any potential cleaning concerns
And when she watches you on her Nest cam? How are you going to explain it to her as she boots you out the door?

Those are all good concerns for you the cleaner. However as a consumer I doubt she will care.

Being the bucket of cold water that I am. I have to tell you that it sounds good but won't be accurate.

Since the rug world is full of fakes, just looking at a rug is a poor way to accurately ID, your device will need a mini-Mars rover to study construction and do chemical and smoke analysis.

Who knows? 60% may be good enough for some and may be better than nothing.

I'm sure the flora and fauna app hovers around 60% too but as long as it keeps you out the poison oak and ivy, I think it's a worthwhile adventure..

I can't imagine to be that hard to have a nap that told you country of origin, man-made or machine, reasonably accurate fiber content and maybe a fun fact or two like how many times the 12-year-old girl downloaded a Dua lipa song onto her potato.

We all ready know how hard you want to work, Ill call Gilgamesh if and when.
:icon_rolleyes:

It's certainly not in my wheelhouse.

but what you see as a simple app, in this case plant id, is actually the result of decades of datasets and fine tuning algorithms/machine learning/neural networks
.....and many people working on it. Obviously the framework exist for this to be technically possible....now all you need is a tremendous amount of data and people that would want to work to create it. It isn't just "this picture looks like this rug".

You aren't going to get it done for $500 bucks by a friend that went to community college...........so I guess it's out of your wheelhouse too

It would be as accurate as an ap for stone ID.
Fakes are getting really good at, faking it.
Just like Elaine on Seinfeld..........
Fake...Fake......Fake!

But who is your target market? Certainly not rugsnobs, they already know it all. Carpet cleaners?

That's a narrow market, not all carpet cleaners take rugs in.

They are also a fickle group. Most are too cheap to see a value in it.

You need something more mainstream that is needed by more cleaners.

My coder son said this could work if it is set up like many other ID apps. If they can't distinguish things from a photo, they sort out the chaff and give you a reduced menu of possibilities.

They rely on a. i. (actual intelligence) to take the final step.

I think that you need to think of categories of rugs: flatweaves, machine made, Chinese, Persian, Tribal, Antique. Add construction types like tufted and unique fibers like viscose, and silk. I did a video on you-tube once that went through the various types with unique cleaning challenges. Going beyond that is more than any new cleaner can absorb. Over time you will pick up on the types you see most. In my day it was Heriz, Persian Sarouks, and Indian dhurries (almost as bad as viscose without the high price tag).

Or you could buy Ruth Travis's rug ID cards and study up on rugs. I'd trust the guy who already knows what he's talking about with my rug rather than the guy who has to use his phones camera to get an idea of what it is or how to clean it.
