5000 sf and a Zipper

Its only taken me two or three years, but I’ve finally learned to love my Zipper wand. I had just a little over 5000 sf of cut pile commercial carpet, in a bank, to clean today. While Brady was cleaning the ceramic, slate and vinyl, I got to play around with the carpet.

If this had been a weeknight job, I would have used the Devastator wand, because I would have wanted to make certain it dried before the next day. To be certain of that with the Zipper, I would have felt it needed drying passes and that seems to slow me down to the point that it doesn’t save any time. Since it had until Monday to dry, I flew through with the trigger pulled blowing and going!

Now I can be in love with the Zipper.

Almost as much as Mr. Happy.

One slight downside though. I may be bedridden by tomorrow. Pushing and pulling that Zipper is totally different from wanding! This is only the second time I’ve used it on a big, hours long job. My arthritic back didn’t handle it as well as the wand movement.

I almost called Stephen to see if he wanted to come down and watch a real carpet cleaner work, but didn’t want to have to buy his lunch. I was already having to feed Jr.

Can you do a short version? Too much verbosity.

So it’s not faster, drying is not fast either and your back hurts after? Or is this unique to Marty?

It’s fantastically faster, if you don’t do drying passes. If you do, then you might as well use your Devastator.

I have arthritis of my lumbar vertebrae, so my back is atypical.

The main problem with the Zipper is how you use it. One, it has to be adjusted properly to the carpet you are using it on. If it's too light, you're not extracting enough. If it's too heavy, you're killing your back. You also have to learn to manage your hose or else, you will be one handing it with the other hand flinging your hose out of the way. Used properly, with both hands, adjusted to the carpet, it is much easier on your back and shoulders. I usually do dry passes just because I can. The Zipper leaves the carpet much drier than a wand in my experience. I am using it on commercial carpet mainly. Only played a couple of times on residential. Like any new tool, it has a learning curve. With a helper to manage your hoses, it's phenomenally fast.
