A customer just called about padding marks from 175

A customer just called and said "I can see where you cleaned the carpet. It looks light and dark in some areas." This was a cgd that I steam cleaned and buffed dry. He is looking at the cleaning pattern left by the buffer which was not bad as this was a cgd olefin carpet. I told him the carpet was fine and to just vacuum and that normal foot traffic would remove the cleaning marks. What would you say?

As long as you didn't run the pad too dry and put burns into the carpet, I think you should be fine. I use OP to post pad commerical.

I wouldn't say anything other then be right over, I would have gone and addressed his concerns, if it was cut pile you should have raked it

You probably gonna have to go back, I would at least go back, fix my screw up, and see if the the vacuuming will remove the marks. Probably won't.

sounds like a rotary was used and not an op machine, the light and dark is from the different directions from the rotary

telling the customer to go vacuum it just doesn't sound good

No it is not cut pile. It is cgd olefin carpet and regular foot traffic will remove the barely noticeable swirl marks. Heck no I am not going to vacuum 3k sq/ft of carpet. This guy is acting like you do when you get a new car and avoid every crack in the road. He restored this building and laid the carpet with a friend. Let me ask you this. Do you rake cgd after post padding it because that is all I did with green stripe bonnets? If you do then you are king in my book because I'm sure not going to do it.

if you had a wide area vacuum it would be a piece of cake

I wouldn't rake looped carpet but sounds like you didn't really get it clean or you wouldn't notice any swirl marks

why use a green strip bonnet, those things are really not worth buying or using, I think Dobs would use them to push the teflon around but that is all they do is spread , they don't absorb

but like the above post, you really shouldn't try to get a carpet dry with a bonnet or use a dry bonnet and rotary on carpet, it will burn it

Why ask for criticism or feedback only to argue how someone else does things? This is not a joust, just constructive criticism on how to handle the problem. Do it right one, or do it twice. :wink:

Ten four sir. You wanna let me know what pad I should be using? I usually use the fluffy cotton pads but have been looking for something else.

i would of done exactly what you did with exception of telling him to vac his "issue" away. i would of explained what the pattern was from and that would of been the end of it.

I'm guessing you basically set the nap in 2 different directions. If so your worst case scenario is you reclean (with high heat) and groom it. You may need to work in small sections. Steam & groom in 5x5 sections.... Although, a good pile lifting (in both a north & south/east & west) and a little traffic will probably take care of it...

If not you may have distorted (or burnt if it's olephen) the fibers a bit and may need to kiss some ass and/or replace some carpet. Good luck!

REALLY? The guy is totally fine with the carpet and is my friend but called to say he could see where I cleaned the carpet. I was just checking to see how many people actually take the time to post pad and who rakes cgd. Any decent cleaner will take the time to pad a carpet if it means a better job, but no one is going to rake a cgd. Before I padded the carpet you could see wand patterns barely in the carpet with a hole glide, and raking would have left marks. It is called cleaning. I did learn to use the stipe bonnets to prescrub with. They do ok for post padding but I know a better option exists. What pads would you reccommend and where can I get some? And melting or burning a carpet with a bonnet isn't going to happen running a 175 quickly over a carpet. Come on now. We are talking about a cotton pad which glides accross the carpet. Maybe someone who has never ran a 175 could damage a carpet with a brush. Yes in fact I did see someone burn a carpet trying to shower feed a brush on a dry cgd. Anyone with common sense could avoid that. I appreciate the feedback though. So basically I need better pads and need to communicate with the customer better to let them know if they want a cleaner carpet they will have to live with clean marks for a few days. Does anyone run an RX on cgd? If so you are going to get swirl marks be it they are just barely noticeable.

Clarification, you didn't do "padding" you bonneted.

As John G so eloquently put it.. The green stripped bonnet is not the best for post padding. The cotton pads and and even the big loop cotton or rayon pads are what you seek. You want the most absorbant pad you can get to remove the excess moisture and any remaining soils.

And if you find that there is not enough moisture for proper lubrication without causing fiber distortion, throw down a little encap juice as well. Sometimes this can make your post padding really pop.

Does anyone run an RX on cgd? If so you are going to get swirl marks be it they are just barely noticeable.

My RX left marks on the cgd of major real estate developer's offices and lobby. I pointed them out to him and volunteered to get them out. He said, "Don't bother. They're like lawn mower lines on a baseball diamond."
