It seems like such a major expense. Especially for guys using larger machines.

Well I just crunched my numbers and fuel usuage was not that bad. In fact I did enough business in one week during the spring to cover the entire year.

That got me thinking. I was considering going to a smaller truck and machine, but that would only save a small amount compared to the revenue I would loose from decreased production. I am seriously considering a truck like Harpers. It just makes sense. I have no doubt I will make more money in the same time. Dual wanding is one thing, but cleaning carpet and tile in one trip or carpet and upholstery is a whole different ballgame. Just think about the commerical possibilities it could open up. I am going to wait a few months so I can pay everything off at once.

I was convinced that saving money on fuel would make me richer. That is so wrong. That would only add a few thousand to my bottom line every year.

there is not one sure thing in this industry by itself going to make you rich.....but being aware of your fuel mileage and other things around you will put you on the right track...........

I am getting 16 to 17 on my new set up....it is better then the vortex which I got 14 to 15....also I am not pumping diesel fuel anymore....so I am saving anywhere from .30 to .40 cents per gallon.....

I think I get around 7-8 mpg.

I need a bigger engine.

I can work two days on a slap full tank or 1.5 if we are doing large jobs.

It's not so bad.

Im not worried about the direct cost to me of rising fuel cost. But the loss of expendable income of my customers!! Carpet cleaning is pretty low on the list of priorities when it comes to raising a family on a ever shrinking budget.

Fuel & chemical...are the MOST...insignificant...cost you should be concerned with...!

They are proportional to the amount of work ITSELF.... :!:

PENNY Wise & DOLLAR foolish...

"LABOR COST".....is the kIllEr to the bottom line.... !gotcha!

CHEEP ...Inferior equipment & chemical's....WILL KILL YOU IN LABOR COST...

Buy the BEST of each..and ...WATCH your PROFITs SOAR.... :!: :!: :!:

ps..It amazes me how you guys will BRAG about saving $5.00 on a gallon of jUiCe...
The spend $150.00...in extra labor to finish off the gallon...

i am looking at going back to a truck and trailer set up....

WHY???

can use the truck for personal if needed...only have the durango right now so

MPG...my box gets 10 across the board..but if i go with a diesel truck then it goes to 15 or possibly higher, and thats with pulling the trailer...

I will NEVER EVER EVER go to a van/smaller trailer...i had a 6x10 a while ago...ewwww..

My 1st trailer with a TM in it was a 7x14..loved it....bought a van for my floor buff jobs...all over the state...

then i went to a box truck...more carpet less floors...

basicly the BIG truck or trailer is the way to go if you want to do multiple things at a job in 1 whack

Plus if i get this new floor buffing gig...i will need to take workers with me and service multiple locations in a night...

I'm sure people are tired of me bragging... Free veggie oil blah blah...
I've actually turned my veggie usage into a profitable side business, selling the super-filtered premium veggie oil I don't use to other greasers.

Even if I HAD to buy diesel, My Ambulance gets 22+mpg, and burns less than 1/2 gal/hr cleaning

Higher gas prices is great for carpet cleaners.

The higher the better!!!!

New carpet prices have a direct correlation to the price of oil.

Higher prices will give professional upkeep of carpets even more importance.

Bring it.

Its money in the bank.

Dave ...is correct.!

However...the consumer will ...move to a HARD SURFACE flooring option...!
This has already begun over the last 5 years...First because "raw goods"
prices of carpet & allergy concerns...!

If you have NOT moved into the hard surface cleaning direction...?
"You better Hurry Up"...If you do NOT diversify...you may not continue to exist..!

Ps YES...There will always be a demand for carpet...!
But it will be MUCH MORE expensive than laminates & ceramic tile...
"Price will DRIVE the chAnGe".... thathurts

worried? So you don't know what your profit margin is should gas go up? Call Magic Wand and get Taf's spread sheet. Take a deep breath and plug in your own numbers. Fuel can go through the ceiling and the effect on your profit margin will amaze you. What you will find in other areas will amaze you even further like, "why don't I raise my prices"?, and, "holy shit why am I in this buisness"?! You'll forget all about electric TM's.

donno about those gas guzzling direct drives
(what a waste of a 200 hp engine to do the job of a 25-35hp motor  )

the lions share of fuel used isn't powering the cleaning equipment .
The lion's share is used getting the equipment to the jobs

I think someone may have already mentioned it, higher fuel costs effect the prospects ability or willingness to SPEND discretionary income...which is where the money comes from for cleaning services

My fuel bills have droped by selling my Hydramaster 470D and now I.m all Larry Cobb Dynachem the smallest unit made 2045 half the weight of the other unit. I love to clean upholstery now this unit runs much slower speed and makes the cleaning easier. I cant tell the difference in mileage and the van has more pep with less weight. Over a year has past and no problems with this unit and also using Larrys chemicials it a great combo. Now life is simple and easy just ask me! jz.

Thanks Jack,

I'm glad the 20HP Kohler & Chems are performing well for your clients.

Of course, your experience also enhances the results.

The appeal of electric truckmounts isn't only in fuel usage, but in reliability. I'm not totally mechinacly illiterate.... but troubleshooting a job in miss Piffletons yard shoots up my blood pressure, even if its something simple that is easly fixed in 2 minutes like gunk on my waste tank float. I can understand why guys doing commercial wouldn't want an electric mount too. For bussiness like mine doing mostly small commerical and residental an electric truckmount in a Ford Transit or somthing simular looks promising. Before you guys pop on here and say get a portable; I'm not into exausting nasty air into someones house, dumping in their toliet, or filling up from their sink.

I worry more about the garbage carpet being sold today. I think carpet manufacturers will make or break this industry. What I pay for gas can be adjusted in the price for my service...
