As far as trading links...
It matters to me, as a webmaster with whom you may be asking to trade links. If a TEXT link to your "links" page is not on your main page, it is rare for me to continue researching your website to even consider link swapping. Beware: Not all backlinks are good! Many will even HURT your rankings. Don't trade links with anyone and everyone, just for a backlink.

The best links are one way links from highly ranked sites in your industry to your page.

Links from highly ranked sites not in your industry come in second.

Links from lowly ranked sites in your industry next

You never want to link to bad neighborhoods--porn---viagra---equipment extension--- If your site is run as a blog you do not want to approve any comments that link to unsavory websites..

but links from their sites will not have a negative effect---As Stated by Google ---this is so Mikey cannot sabotage another website from outside...

Trading links has lost a lot of the seo power that it used to have.
I only go for one way links to my sites.

I am a SEO guy but I almost exclusively work on my own sites.
