Cleaned for a guy the about two weeks ago and he wrote me a bad check about 240.00. Surprisingly he’s not answering my calls. Should I just give up?

give up trying to collect?
hell no

if it's an open account, call the bank every day to see if funds are available.
when they're available drive down and collect your dough

if the check is in your name, they'll give you cash.
if it's in your company name, they'll issue a bank draft to your company name

I've had to do that a couple times

I have shown up on their front door step before. Seems to be pretty effective. But I've only had 2 checks in 7 years that i couldnt collect on. Maybe a total of 10 total returned checks in 7 years.

I've done that.
The bank won't tell you how much is in the account but they will tell you if it's enough to cover the check.

You can re-deposit checks 3 times I think depending on your state laws.

I don't re-deposit them in "my" account.
i go directly to the dead beat's bank and get my money.
By re-depositing it in my account, there's a risk of the funds not being available depending on the length of electronic transfer time

Right, I just meant in general.

I have gone there to get the funds directly from their bank as well.

The worst is when you bill a decent customer and they don't ever pay you. I have a bill out for $150.00 that is killing me just because I see it everyday. I call the guy and if he answers he tells me he will pay me right away. He has spent a lot of money with me so he gets a little leway but still. I am just about to the point of showing up to his house.

Meat is spot on. However once the account is closed you will need to find out YOUR STATES procedures for collecting bad checks. Some states take it real serious. You can get your money plus service charges pretty easy. Some are a PAIN IN THE ASS. Unless things have changed New York State was the worst I had ever encountered. They took speeding tickets more seriously than bad checks.

If none of this advice gets your money you can always contact a local collections agency and for a small fee they will hound his ass.

I believe if you still don't collect you can deduct it on your income tax.

In the years we have cleaned we have only had 2

We just mail them to the Pima County Attorney's office and they handle it.....

They put them on a list a when they resurface they are flagged and they find them and hit them with all types of fines and we sooner or later have gotten our money and it does not cost us nothing but a stamp to mail it to them......................

Personally I try to be discreet at first, I don't want to embarass them if it was an honest mistake. I've only gotten three and they all paid pretty quick.

If that didn't work then I like Larry and Rex's approach about going to their bank and maybe throw in a little of Mikey's approach of embarassing them. I'll tell you though some people just cannot be embarassed, they don't give a rip and their circle of friends don't give a rip either.

I've only had one $75.00 job never pay..looked at it like charity work..ghetto job.

In the last week I have had two checks returned. Both gladly paid a cc over the phone and I added on the banks service charge as well.

I like to think that people are generally good. Especially when you know where they live.
