This week I was referred to a new customer from a current customer. The new customer was moving into a nice 3-4 year old home and just had their carpets cleaned by Steamatic. (Usually a reputable firm- I agree). HOWEVER, when the lady booked (Worn out, greasy, etc. ?)

Got to the house and sae the "dark patches". She explained that the previous cleaning tech brought in his hose, and in his words, "cleaned with an emulsifier and 160 degree steam." OOOOOKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK. No prespray, no spotting, no scrubbing! The customer went on to tell me that the Steamatic tech explained to her that the dark patches in her carpeting were the result of "electrical static burns and would not come out." WTF!!!!!!?????

I'm not the most experienced cleaner by any means but gimme a break!

I did my normal cleaning by using my Grease Eraser, misted a light layer of citrus over the area and scrubbed it in. Rinse with an all fiber rinse and viola!!! Just as easy as removing filtration lines! (Which in essence is exactly what the problem was, just happened to be in the middle of the flooring for some reason.)

Just to make sure I wasn't a TOTAL idiot, I called my rep at JonDon and got on the line with their tech specialist also and gave them the story. They were just as surprised as I was to find out that such a thing as "electrical static burns" existed.

A word to the wise; DON'T B. S. THE CUSTOMER! It comes back to bite you in the butt!

You mean, you never heard of electrical static burns on carpet?

The spots may have been misdiagnosed. But Electrical static burns are a real dilemma to be aware of:

Man's static jacket sparks alert
An Australian man built up so much static electricity in his clothes as he walked that he burned carpets, melted plastic and sparked a mass evacuation.
Frank Clewer, of the western Victorian city of Warrnambool, was wearing a synthetic nylon jacket and a woollen shirt when he went for a job interview.

As he walked into the building, the carpet ignited from the 40,000 volts of static electricity that had built up.

"It sounded almost like a firecracker or something like that," he said.
"Within about five minutes, the carpet started to erupt," he told Australian radio.

Considerable current

Perplexed firemen evacuated the building and cut its electricity supply, thinking the burns could have been caused by a power surge.

"There were several scorch marks in the carpet, and we could hear a cracking noise - a bit like a whip - both inside and outside the building," said fire official Henry Barton.

Mr Clewer said that after leaving the building, he scorched a piece of plastic in his car.

His clothes were measured by firemen as carrying an electrical charge of 40,000 volts, the Reuters news agency quoted Mr Barton as saying.

The fire official added that the charge was close to being high enough to cause the items to spontaneously combust.

"I've been firefighting for over 35 years and I've never come across anything like this," he said.

There was another case caused from an overweight woman wearing panty hose.

She was walking briskly on her way to the restroom across a large office.

The static and voltage was so great that she spontaneously combusted.

Witnesses said they thought they smelled something burning and then saw smoke coming out from under her skirt.

Then in a blinding flash of light all that was left was just a pile of ashes and a pair of smoking stiletto shoes.

Sad story. But, great shoes!!

BTW... soil filtration lines in the center of a room are from a combination of unducted cold air returns between floor joists and gaps in the subfloor allowing a path thru the carpet. I've only seen it a couple of times, Kentucky craftsmanship at its best.
