I'm doing the outside of one next week. How do you keep the cleaner from sliding down?. Of course the middle portion has a lot of soot. I was thinking about making some kind of paste with a degreaser for this portion and paint it on while I work on the other areas. Do I just add baking soda to it?.

and i thought i cleaned some werid shit

couldnt hurt i guess...of course try it before you go there...

or find a thick degreaser that has some cling to it...

or use a heavy dilution then it breaks it down faster...keep scrubbin and keep it wet.

Liquid cleaners will also run into some porous brick and cause permanent discoloration. I tried to avoid cleaning brick with liquids. Test a small area first, especially if the brick is porous.

Some possible methods are to use soot removal sponges, blast with compressed air and/or vacuum, solvent gels, media blasting for worst case scenarios.

I didn't have any problem at all with the stuff running down. I sprayed and used a tampico brush to spread it and agitate. The brick was jagged. It was actually a fun job.

Not totally dry yet, grout lines were lightening up.

did you hand scrub and rinse or did you use high pressure tools?

Hand scrubbed and high pressure with cobra 3 jet. The scrub was fairly light due to the soft bristles of the brush. Also used a small toothbrush type brush for the grout in the front of the fireplace.
