what's under the room?
Main floor?
Basement?
Slab?
and how old is the house?
and was that the only room like it?

we don't know what the previous folks had/did there .
hell, for all we know, it's tape residue from a checkerboard hopscotch game .
Or it's used rug that was folded wrong and sat for years in a dirty/disty place

The the first pic though, sure looks likes the pattern a subfloor would be laid

Filtration lines through subfloor just as Lee pointed out.... if you look at the size of the pattern, it’s 4’ by 8’.... exactly the size of a sheet of plywood...

Negative air, from a furnace RETURN line between the floor beams pulled unfiltered air thru gaps in the plywood floor, leaving filtration line in the middle of the floor
Amazing conclusion! Learned something new.
that was worth the price of admission here.

Will contact the new homeowners and let them know i had a sample taken to my “lab analysis expert” and this is results of their findings.

Grab a corner pull it back see if that's where the seams in the plywood are. Lee wins....

I have to give Cliff Zlotnik of Unsmoke due credit for giving me the courage to pull carpet back to diagnosis...back in 1980
