my sprinter van has a bad rear end. I need to know whether it's a 4.11 or 3.72 gear ratio.

Both numbers appear on the differential tag.

Can anyone tell me what it is by looking at it?

The van is a 2003 Dodge Sprinter 2500 w/ ABS.

Thanks!

41:11 = 3.727

Ring 41 teeth...pinion 11............41 divided by 11 = 3.727

Dan is correct as far as standard nomenclature with 3.73 (rounded up from 3.727)

just showing what the numbers on the plate mean ..... and providing the answer to the question that appears to have been asked of you (4.11 or 3.72)

George, once you get it swapped or rebuilt - change the gear oil religiously every 30k - you will never have another issue again - I forget the weight, but I used mobil 1 full synthetic and put a few hundred thou on my 2002-2006 fleet before I moved into the new body style.

There was a co. in TX I believe they were called Quality Sprinter. Good used parts and on the cheap. Bought a turbo for $350 and put 70k on it and it's still out there running.

e-mail them if their phone doesn't work

Also - use a low ash engine oil. The particulate filter will clog, not a matter of if, but a matter of when, and it's bye bye cat and muffler, the assembly is about $2000-2400 if memory serves...... ask me how I know.....

I'm using a mobil 1 15-40 esp formula - will likely have to special order it from your local mobil 1 disty, ours delivers with no minimum, not cheap, but it's a must.
