What materials are most of these pads made from?
Does the composition change as they become more "aggressive"?
Is a soft white pad made from the same material as a aggressive black pad?
Or are they different materials?

I find that the grey ones wear out quicker than the champagne ones.

I don't know of the composition, but I'd think they're a bit different. Just a guess though.

I aint no janitor so I don't know what all the different colors specilize in but they go from White for buffing, shining etc to black for the serious scrubbing, stripping. they also have special Hogs hair pads that are quite expensive and they have the synthetics for all the different uses. For carpet I have only used the beige and gray that RickG sells. I have heard of others using the std Janitorial hard surface scrub pads of red and green with the green more aggressive.

The base fibers of all the synthetic pads are pretty much the same. Some variations from one manufacturer to the next.

The differences in aggressiveness come from coating over the fibers. Carbide and other abrasives applied over the fibers and then made into pads.
