the exif data is recorded on photos you take. It includes information about the photos like the camera, exposure, shutter speed, orientation, etc

and in the case of GPS enabled cameras like your phone it records the location (can be turned off)

Previously I had the server strip this data (location only) from image files. When I "upgraded" I must have forgotten to change the settings so that it continued to do so........
