We bought a lot of chemicals and equipment from Ed and Wanda. Attended training all over the country at Ed's seminars and conventions. He was part genius, part car salesman. He had vision of an professional cleaners industry.

Which at the time was just a group of rug suckers with little training or knowledge. It's only too bad he couldn't have been around for the age of information.

He would have loved you Mike! There again he would have probably taken Fred from you and started Ed's board. 😉

Ed was from the south right?

No way the two of them would have gotten along.....
They were in Fresno. Not sure where he was born.
Steam Services was their company. We bought 3 vapor vac's from them. The old coffee pot type machines. Steam Genie's Hydrogenie II, along with spotters and primary chemical line.

They were one of few carpet cleaning distributors back then. Most products for carpet cleaning were janitorial products. Chemspec was the only big brand I remember and they were focused on inplant rug operations and building maintenance.

He’d have loved Mike until he hated him.

That was Ed’s pattern.

Also, Mike’s inability to allow absurdity to go past without a joke or hypocrisy without a jab would have gotten him in hot water fast.

Ed had an innovative brilliance, but he was more than a bit the con artist and surely as unhinged as they come.

I don’t say that to negate his myriad of accomplishments and contributions....the IICRC likely not even the most important ones.

But I knew him well, and no one here would care for him one bit.

Ed at one time was trying to sell stuff on the old ICS board. And Jim is right about him just not putting up with smartasses. I attended a class down in KC way back (1990?) when and met him. HE was the first to introduce the cimex and low moisture cleaning................NOT #####!

I won a low volume fogger that I still have to this day. And they still sell the same damn thing now unchanged for $600.

My first TM, a JK Sales, was purchased thru Ed in 1979. Ha, ha! $4444. I should have know something was up with that price.

He sold a Cimex package with a couple of cases of LST, low surface tension gel like chemical that Keith Williams designed.

Worked pretty well but the improvements that Rick added to the method were 1) Pads, Ed was selling it with brushes which do ok but the use of pads distributes the solution better and is aggressive yet the pad breaks down not the carpet.
2)Releasit is a far superior product compared to LST. Cleans well, doesn't resoil and actually "looks" better than HWE.

Rick has also spent more than a decade fighting an uphill battle trying to educate unbelievers to low moisture cleaning. The man persistence has paid off. Its seems many of the loudest doubters are now singing the benefits of the method now.

Nice to see the recognition of Ed York's contribution. And Kevin Pearson's a great chairman to share in this accomplishment.

Ed and I shared hours talking about the Cimex, his LST, and how to improve low moisture cleaning. As Jim said, Ed could be cantankerous. But he was also open to new ideas. Ed was a fan of the Cimex, low moisture cleaning, and thinking outside the box! If the IICRC can carry Ed's creative thinking forward - I'm sure the organization will prosper. Rather than burying its head in the sand and running itself in a political manner, like it's done in years gone by. With good folks like Kevin Pearson at the helm, I'm optimistic that the ingenuity of Ed York will continue to find its way into the organization.

I only met him a couple times and he was always busy. I liked him though...like I like Mike. Both guys doing their thing and you can support them ...or not. All I know was I was a very proud member of SCT and the events I went to were very helpful.
Just meeting other Cleaners at SCT events, some very successful from my then perspective, did wonders for my business. He changed the game.

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.

WOW, I attended a class with Ed in 1993. Always enjoyed talking with him but never fully believed all his theories.

He came onto one of the old bulletin boards (ICS or Cleanfax) briefly. He was as big an asshole as Me and Boyle.
ICS. It was during the Mold is Gold era. He was trying to make a case for using the word "Mildew" instead of "Mold" so that insurance companies would cover it as a loss. I fought with him some. Later found out he was on his death bed and a nurse was typing for him.

Probably should have let it go, but it was just semantics and no insurance company would have ever paid a claim under those circumstances.

Felt bad either way. 😔
