this summer I had 10,000 EDDM postcard printed up. I've sent out about 7000 with only 1 EDDM coupon being used.

I'm trying to decide what to do with the remaining 3000 cards.
1) do I throw them out?
or
2) Do I mail them and let the receiver toss them out? this will cost about $600
with this option should I mail them to same zip code that already received one or a new one?

marketers will claim that even if they didn't use the coupon the receiver at least saw your company name.- so maybe this is the hidden benefit?

I think this will be the last time I do EDDM.

Wow, I've heard EDDM is not too great but didn't think anything could be that bad. Thanks for sharing, John.

I'm in the same situation as you. I have about 18k EDDM sitting in boxes around my house. I 'm sitting here wondering what I should do with them. I've tracked all my EDDM on a spreadsheet and have never lost money. I've constantly had a 4:1 return or better. I find that people hold on to them for years. They'll hand it to you wanting the coupon price. It blows me away. I'll eventually send them out into the world. I'm tired of looking at them. That first EDDM got me a 9:1 return. IT's still churning because many of those customers have become repeats and referral sources.

EDDM got me started. I blasted Redding with 30k mailers for $99 whole house specials. It got my phone ringing and enabled me to start building my customer list. now my "Special" is three rooms and a hall for $150, but they still work. Also, my cards are so big that people are forced to look at them when they touch them. I believe they're 6.5" X 11", or close to that.

Wow, two completely opposite results @Papa John and @Nomad74

Seems to me @Papa John it was either your message or addresses.

I would like to do a co-op door hanger with a landscaper, for example, each takes a side and have them hand delivered for about .10 cents each. Split the cost.

But I can't find anyone to distribute them and can't trust just anyone not to just throw them all away.

Yeah I notice that also.
Damon was building a business and was willing to give a bigger discount just for the exposure. I was just giving 1 room cleaned free.
I started the EDDM experiment back when we were slow.. Thankfully we got busy just by giving great service, which translated into free word of mouth advertising.

Can we see the card?

Hard to comment on what to do without seeing what the offer is

That rate of return is horrible.... unless it was a $5000 job

Doesn't Matter
If Kirby distributors are active in your area the FREE room clean may not work because that is what their telemarketers say to get the salesman in the house.

I've notice that in my area people don't feel comfortable getting discounts or earning credits towards free service. Groupon encounters seem to leave them skeptical and unhappy. That's why we don't do Groupon.

And Existing clients don't want to refer friends in exchange for a "kickback".
However They will use a coupon if sent to them.

I see you add a .4% health care fee. What is that and why are you adding and mentioning an extra fee that is less than half a percent?

Its 4% actually. It's to cover Obama care. Since our guys get paid commission it was better to add this fee then to increase our prices. Around here our customer's seem to not mind it and are impressed that we are taking care of our crew..

Okay, but it looks like .4% from here which is 4/10 of 1%.

Personally I don't care for the offer

In big print you're giving away a Free room... the conditions are that you need to spend at least $130 for 2 rooms first( $65 value per room)

Then you whack hard working single family home owners with a 4% subsidizing tax to insure their families as well as paying for their their own

This is the impression I get when I put my consumer glasses on

It's a typical " too good to be true" offer

I'd circular file the remaining cards... sounds like you'll get nearly the same response anyways and save $600

The ones that SELL EDDM are the ones most convinced it works

IMO. Damon has the right bait for this medium

EDDM is just fancy wording for stand alone ValPak coupon

The " high end" target market doesn't fall for that plus sell fine print garbage. At least not more than a few times

If I were to Target just wealthy homes I wouldn't market prices. Just tell them what I can do for them in as little words as possible and one or two good pics. Send one every three months to the same address changing every 2 ND or third time until they book then send thank you and reminders.

But I doubt I'll ever do this because of where I live and I hate working for marketing ( cept referrals). I'd have to have employees then, full time and several vans.

I want a simpler life.

So this is a good place to vent my thoughts. When I first started, I was desperate to make the phone ring. EDDM Retail had just come out by the USPS and I learned everything I could about it. I knew more than the postal employees. I dreaded, and still do at times, delivering my bundles to the post office. The counter people had a look of fear in their eyes when they would see me wheel in my cart loaded with 5,000 fliers. They were so clueless on how to process it. I'd make sure my paperwork was in order and have printed copies of the instructions from the USPS website in my hand. Often times I'd have to walk the Postal worker through the process, explaining to them what boxes needed checking and how the bundle count was documented. I'd always pay online so when I arrived at the post office it would be easy for them to just scan and take it. Also, in my mind, since I had prepaid online they would be forced to take it from me, no matter what. My theory on EDDM is that it has to be simple, colorful, big enough that the customer can't ignore it, and have a family picture. Seemed to work for me. If you don't have a family, run up next to a kid at the local city park and start taking pictures. I hear that's a good way to make friends.

Now for my next thought. I find myself becoming more eccentric the longer I do this. I'm no longer worried about the phone ringing and I don't market to the coupon clippers anymore. I think it's important to remember where you started and not forget that, especially when giving advice to new guys. A well seasoned business is different from a guy starting up with a shitter van and a porty. I remember when I first started thinking that everyone was full of crap that claimed they were making $100 per hour. Now I regularly do it, and sometime quite a bit more, sometime less. We all want to make the big money, but in my case, when I was just starting out, I was incapable of making the big money due to my lack of experience and equipment. With my porty it would take me 5 hours to clean a three bedroom house. How did I do it? Keeping that in mind, when I talk with guys asking me for advise, I first try and gauge where they're at in their businesses, then try to advise them what next building blocks should be implemented. My first EDDM $99 whole house special up to 1,600 sqft almost killed me, but it blasted me out of a cannon. Within the first year I had 200 customers. So I can't forget how and where I started. I still haven't figured it all out and lean on many of you for advice. My business is ready to take the next exponential step, but pushing through the wall has been tough.

That being said, I see something happening to me that happens to alot of the great musicians and actors. I'm only using them as an example because it makes my point clear. I'm by no means saying I'm a famous singer or actor, even though I am the fat Tom Cruise. You see guys like Freddie Mercury, Brian Wilson, Bobby Darin, Robbin Williams, all the Beatles. Once they got to a point of "making it" they all stepped away and started experimenting and becoming more artistic within their mediums. That's how I feel. I no longer cater to price shoppers and offer coupons. I feel what I do is an art and enjoy creating for the connoisseur. Let's just hope I don't fall on my face like Freddie Mercury did with his 1985 Mr. Bad Guy album.

I did a whole page ad in my city and the three larger ones near me in Michigan. Advertised 3 rooms and a hall $99. Got so busy and went from $10000 the first year to $40,000 the next and hit $60,000 the third year a year after the ad.
If I was smart I would've hired then and kept it rolling but I got divorced instead. Lots of tough years but back on track now. Knda.

I built my business with flyers alone!! I did 500,000 flyers in 9 years by hand in my car, paper box to paper box.. When I wasn't working, I was doing flyers, 8 or more hours a day... Work just comes in now ,but I plan to hire.. I might get 50,000 flyers made just in case.

It's guys like you that really drive me. I love your videos. I feel i'm doing pretty well considering my small population within my area but I know I could be doing better. Taking on that crazy $900 per month loan for my SS-870, plus my other business expenses, has been a big nut to cover every month. I've been saving like mad and also sold my bike and corvette. I've got about $4k to go on the $38k loan and then i'll have that bastard paid off. The last couple of months has been tough with all the repairs to my home and vehicles that hit us. Then for about a week I experienced a slow-down like never before. I was flippin stressed. Then things turned around and the phone started ringing again. This business can be crazy cyclical! I just found out that my bid was accepted by FEMA to clean their Redding headquarters building, so that chunk will all go toward the 870 loan. I should have that bad boy paid off within the next month. Fingers crossed.

I hope you asked about payment... Some of those federal jobs can take 90-180 days to pay... I turn down some work, because we need the money now... It's hard to carry receivables... I always make it a point to clarify expected payment..
